Monte Frederick Dewey

Monte Frederick Dewey of Durham passed away peacefully on the morning of September 20, 2017 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Disease.

Monte was born on November 22, 1936 in Cleveland, OH, the only child of Frederick and Mildred Dewey. He graduated from Rocky River High School, a Cleveland suburb.

He graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1958 where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He met Gloria Kissinger when they were counselors at Camp Akita and they married at First Community Church in Columbus, Ohio on August 29, 1959.

Monte's early career was in computers. Following moves to Dayton, OH and Chicago, IL the family moved to Durham in 1975 when Monte joined Colorcraft Corporation as manager of the computer department. In 1988, he earned an MBA from the Duke Fuqua School of Business.

He was deeply devoted to his family, was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, enjoyed his weekly bowling league and reading spy and mystery novels.

Monte is survived by his wife of 58 years Gloria Kissinger Dewey; his son Mark Robert Dewey and his wife Jill of Austin, TX; his daughter Lisa Beth Dewey of the home; and daughter Kimberly Dewey Shipes and husband Steve of Cary, NC. He is also survived by grandsons Carter Shipes and Henry Dewey, and granddaughters Hampton Shipes and Evelyn Dewey.

A special thank you to Duke Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Monte. The family will hold a private family memorial service on Saturday, October 14th. It will be followed later in the day by a celebration of his life for family and friends. Arrangements are pending.
