Wilson, North Carolina - Mr. Sherman L. "Billy" Edmonds, 85, of Wilson, formerly of Chapel Hill, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021, at his residence.
Billy was born on July 27, 1935, in Orange County, NC, to the late S.R. and Narvellia Edmonds. He was a veteran of the US Navy and was retired from UNC Police as a Major after 30 years of service. Above all else, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be missed.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at 11 am in The Chapel at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, with Rev. Steve Stevenson presiding. The burial will follow at Cane Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.
Billy was preceded in death by his sons, Allen Ray Edmonds and Sherman Leo Edmonds, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Edmonds; his children, Kathy Kirby (Gary) of Graham, Teresa Durham (John) of Chapel Hill, Eddie Edmonds (Erlie) of Summerville, SC, Dale Edmonds (Kim) of Wilson, and Peggy Mason (John) of Chapel Hill; nine grandchildren, Stephanie W. Benfield, Scott Durham, Kimberly D. Walker, Clint Edmonds, Kristen E. Tharrington, Justin Edmonds, Davis Edmonds, Jonathan Edmonds, and Kaitlin Edmonds; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Briles and Linda Taylor, both of SC; and a brother, John L. Edmonds of Florida.
The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday, June 12, from 10 to 10:50 am at Walker's Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill NC 27516.
