Durham, North Carolina - Beloved resident Susie Gordon, age 64, passed away on October 31, 2021 with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Susie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2020. She faced it bravely, with her characteristic wry humor, selflessness, and determination. Her husband, Chris, battling his own cancer, provided loving support and care as they both went through treatment. Chris passed away in June 2021. She is survived by her son Kevin Gordon, her daughter Karen Statum, son-in-law Jay Statum, her father, Everett Headrick, her sister Jenni Legate, brother-in-law Duncan Legate, sister Trina Taylor, and her brother-in-law Ron Taylor.
Susie's background gave her an understanding of the world and an openness to different people and cultures. Born in Caldwell, Idaho in 1957 to Erna and Everett Headrick, a US Agency for International Development officer, she lived in Tripoli and Benghazi, Libya, Kaduna, Nigeria, Kinshasa, Congo ("Zaire") and Fairfax, VA where she graduated from High School in 1975. The following year, she attended the University of Idaho where she met the love of her life, Chris Gordon.
Susie and Chris were married in Carson City, NV in 1977. They moved to Champaign, IL where Chris pursued his doctorate degree and they had their first child, Kevin. The family then settled in Durham, NC, where Chris began working with the US Environmental Protection Agency and their daughter, Karen, was born.
Susie worked for Triangle Dermatology, where she assisted with patient care and office management. She also worked with a local art gallery to plan and cater events, merging two of her personal passions – art and cuisine. Her home showcased many examples of her creative talent.
Friends and family miss Susie's friendship and caring heart. She will be remembered for what she loved most – Family, Camping, Traveling, Dogs (especially her best four-legged friend, Farley), Arts and Crafts, Ladybugs, Dragonflies, Hedgehogs and good wine. Her humor, wisdom, and caring nature inspired many.
We would like to thank the excellent team of hospice staff at Duke Hospice for the love and comfort they provided through her last months.
A memorial will be held Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 2:00PM at the Gathering Room at Clements Funeral Home, 1117 Broad St., Durham, NC 27705.
