I served as a State Department intern at the American Embassy in Bahrain in 1985. Even in my short time in Manama, it was obvious to me that Ambassador Leidel was highly respected among his colleagues, and set an example for professionalism and service which others sought to emulate. As an American, I am grateful that he dedicated his talents to the service of our country over a long and fruitful career. May he rest in peace.

Amb. Leidel was a consummate American diplomat and foreign affairs expert. He set a remarkable standard that we younger officers tried to emulate. He was modest, funny and extremely thoughtful. A great American who served his country quietly and never asked for the appreciation of a nation nor complained of not having received such. RIP Amb. Leidel you certainly inspired many a young diplomat and intelligence officer to service of unique and unheralded kind. Thank you.
