George Coggan Obituary

Dr. George Michael Coggan, 95, Sarasota, died Dec. 3, 2004. He was born Aug. 20, 1909, in Springfield, Mass., and came to Sarasota 51 years ago from Alabama. He practiced medicine in Sarasota for 37 years and was one of the founders of Doctors Hospital and its chief of staff in 1974. He helped found several nursing homes here, including Lakeside East and West, Sarasota Nursing Pavilion and the Beneva Park Club. He graduated from Auburn University, the University of Alabama, the Medical College of Alabama and Veterinary College in Alabama. He was an Army major during World War II. He was a Florida fellow of the American Geriatrics Society, vice chairman and secretary of Florida Life Care, a director of Health System Agency 6 and a charter fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Angiology, Florida Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, American Medical Association and Sarasota County Medical Society. Survivors include his wife, Dori; a daughter, Janet, of Gainesville, Ga.; sons George Jr. of Port Charlotte and Randy of Redmond, Wash.; a stepson, Sandy Steinman, of Jacksonville; and four grandchildren. Graveside family services will be private. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Manatee-Sarasota, 1230 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota, FL 34239.
