Gus Sclafani Obituary

Sclafani, Gus Francis

Gus Francis Sclafani was called home to Our Lord on April 22, 2012. He was born on February 24, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York to Frank and Philomena Sclafani. Gus served in the US Coast Guard aboard the USS Cepheus. The Cepheus was responsible for the delivery of military cargo and personnel for the invasion of Normandy and delivered under fire for the liberation the St. Raphael, France. Gus received a special Award of Appreciation from the French government for his participation at St. Raphael. The ship was later involved with cargo deliveries to Pearl Harbor and came under enemy attack at Okinawa. Gus received two Bronze Stars for his WWII service and four Campaign Medals. Gus came home to Brooklyn where he graduated from St. John's University with a degree in accounting. He opened his own accounting firm in Newark, New Jersey. After many years he was recruited by Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, New Jersey to serve as their Chief Financial Advisor. Gus retired to Venice, Florida in 1979. Gus was an ever compassionate and loving husband and father. He was respected and loved by many family and friends in New Jersey and in Venice. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Benanti Sclafani, daughter, Lorraine, daughter, Janet Sclafani Lovesky (Richard), son Steven Sclafani (Sherri), two granddaughters, Brielle and Justine, and a brother, Lawrence (Marie) and godson, Salvatore. Services will be Saturday, May 19, 2012 10:00 AM at Venice Bible Church. Burial will be private, at a later date at the Sarasota National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Anchin Pavillion Benevolent Fund, 1959 Honore Avenue, Sarasota, Fl. 34235 or Tidewell Hospice, Inc. 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, Florida 34238. Ewing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I knew Gus for many years, and found him to be a loving and caring gentleman. He was a devoted husband and father who Lived well Laughed often and Loved Much. What more can one want? Rest in peace my dear friend. Thanks for everything.
