Joan Dahlberg Schmidt, 79, Bradenton, died Jan. 18, 2008, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick, N.J., followed by interment in Brookside Cemetery, Spotswood, N.J.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Bill; a daughter, Karen Peterson and husband, Wayne, of Franklin Lakes, N.J.; sons Eric Schmidt and wife, Eileen, of Piscataway, N.J., and Jonathan Schmidt and wife, Jennifer, of Hightstown, N.J.; and six grandchildren, Amanda, F. Alexander and Andrew Peterson and Tiffany, Melissa and Rebecca Schmidt. She was predeceased by her son, Fred Alexander Schmidt, in 1978.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., she lived in New Brunswick, N.J., before moving to Spotswood, N.J., in 1957. She enjoyed Florida winters in Trailer Estates, Bradenton, and summers in New Jersey.
Prior to retiring, she taught home economics at the South River Middle School in New Jersey for 18 years. Mrs. Schmidt received her B.S. from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., in 1949, and was a member of the New Jersey Educational Association.
A charter member of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, E. Brunswick, N.J., she was also chapter leader for the Central New Jersey Chapter of the Compassionate Friends and belonged to the Manatee Patchworkers Inc., Bradenton. Leisure time activities included the State Quilt Guild of New Jersey and the Molly Pitcher Stitchers.
