John "Jack" Frederick Schindler, 86, of Sarasota since 1994 and formerly of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, died May 18, 2009.
Survivors include his wife, Paulette Vitrier Schindler; daughter Katharine Welch of Lafayette, Calif., and grandchildren Matthew Thomas, Elizabeth Sarah and Katharine Ann; son John Schindler Jr. of Brecksville, Ohio, granddaughter Loren Schindler-Gavaghan, great-granddaughter Alvia Katharine and grandson John Schindler III; and daughter Sarah Bracken and grandsons MacLeod Cooper and MacGregor Bowes.
Jack was born in 1922 in Falls Church, Va. He was educated at Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania '48 in economics, and at Shrivenham University, Shrivenham, England.
Jack served in the U.S. Army in World War II, where he was wounded and decorated.
He was the owner of the famous Holiday Award-winning restaurant Au Pere Jacques, from 1960 to 1982, as well as Au Pere Jacques Wine Import Co., importing wine from France to his warehouse in Solon, Ohio, from 1982 to 2007.
Jack was a former board member of the Johnson and Wales Culinary College, advisory board member of the Salvation Army in Cleveland, Commandeur and founder of the Chevaliers du Tastevin of Cleveland, Chevaliers du Gousle Seguret (wine producers of Seguret), Cote du Rhone, Chevaliers du Cote du Rhone, Les Gastronomnes de la Mere (Loire Wine Society), Bontemps de Medoc et du Graves, (Bordeau Wine Society).
He frequently lectured on wine and food. He had a live TV program in 1970 featuring cooking and suggested wines. He is featured in the Metropolitan Opera Cookbook and in the Holiday Award Winning Restaurants of the United States Cookbook.
In Sarasota, he was a member of the Ivy League Club, The Field Club, and The Longview Society.
A private graveside service will be held in Lexington, Ohio, for immediate family.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, at The Field Club in Sarasota.
