Dr. Thomas A. Bairnson died peacefully May 1, 2014 in Minneapolis, Minn.



Known to friends and patients as Dr. Tom, he was born and raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He attended high school at Shattuck in Faribault, Minn. After earning his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Ill., he returned to Cedar Falls where he practiced medicine for 37 years. Thomas married Jean Harlan in 1951 and was a devoted husband until her death in 2006.



Dr. Tom served twice as president of the Sartori Medical Society, as chairman of the Black Hawk County Medical Society, and was a member of the Black Hawk County Board of Health. He was a member of the Elks Club and Lion's Club, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He served 12 years in the National Guard.



Dr. Tom was an avid golfer and most recently a member of University Park Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, where he retired with his wife in 1995. Other interests included fishing, photography, woodworking, computer technology, and he deeply enjoyed classical music.



Always willing to share both his infinite wisdom and wit, Thomas Bairnson lived a life devoted to graciousness and honor.



He is survived by his sister, Georganne Mennin of New York City; son, George Andrew Bairnson of Andover, Minn.; daughter, Beth Bairnson Stoll (Louis) of Minnetonka, Minn.; grandchildren Jessica and Troy Zauhar; several nieces and a nephew.



A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on May 27, 2014 at Fourth Baptist Church, 900 Forestview Lane North in Plymouth, Minn., 55441. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to Sartori Hospital Healthcare Foundation, 515 College Street, Cedar Falls, Iowa, 50613.
