Albert Kale Obituary

Albert E. Kale, Jr.

August 12, 1949 - June 22, 2023

Albert E. Kale, Jr., age 73 passed away peacefully Thursday, June 22, at home with his devoted wife Kay by his side. He was born on August 12, 1949 to the late Albert E. Kale and Lucy Vin Starr Kale of Catawba County. Al married Kathryn Thomas, the love of his life, in 1989. The Kales resided in Ocean Isle Beach and Conover before calling Sunset Beach home.

Al attended Newton-Conover High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College where he studied History. He established his career in the furniture and textile industries, and was founder and president of Sunbelt Fabrics. He later enjoyed 30 years of selling real estate.

Associations and leadership roles included six years of service in the U.S. Army Reserves; membership in the Elks Club of Hickory and Calabash; board member of the Fabric Men's Association; an active role in the Rock Barn homeowners association; Federal Political Coordinator for the North Carolina Association of Realtors; and volunteer service to the Fire Department of Ocean Isle Beach.

He was very proud to have established the "I Grew up in Newton-Conover" Facebook Page, where more than 3000 members have shared memories, photos, and archival treasures of small-town North Carolina life. Al loved history and politics and enjoyed talking both with friends. He loved his family and his beloved "Frenchie" bulldog Lucy. His slow-roasted Boston butt barbeque with NC-style sauce was the best in the world.

Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Kay; his children Verna Kale (Steele Nowlin) State College, PA, Clayton (Amy) Kale of Simpsonville, SC, and Jesse Kale of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren, Betty and Julian Nowlin and Gretchen and Troy Kale; brother Lyn (Nina) Starr, Dallas, GA; sisters Sissy (Dickie) Lehmons of Hickory, NC and Kathy (Scott) Guthrie of Cary, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be contributed to the Tunnels to Towers foundation or to your local Humane Society.

Sorry, my friend, for the late reply. I only found out recently that you left this world for a better place. You were a much-remembered school-mate and friend. You will be missed.

Sissy and Kathy,
Al was always a lot of fun growing up. Spending time at your house was always so much fun when big brother Al came around making us laugh. He will be missed by so many friends.
