Bernice Landis Obituary

HICKORY - Bernice Cobb Landis was born Jan. 13, 1916, in Catawba County to the late J.W. and Grace Hilton Cobb. Her husband, J.B. Landis, preceded Mrs. Landis in death. She also was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. After graduating from Blackburn High School in 1933, she moved to New Jersey with her brother, where she worked for eight years. After returning to North Carolina, she met and married J. B. Landis, a widower with five children. Together, they had one son, Roger C. Landis. Mrs. Landis is survived by her son, Roger, and his wife, Kay. Her granddaughter, Karen L. Price and husband, Darren, and two great-granddaughters, Katelyn and Lindsey, survive Mrs. Landis. Mrs. Landis also is survived by two stepdaughters, Catherine L. Tuttle and Rebecca L. Hilton and husband, Ray Hilton Jr. She also is survived by her nephew, Larry Phillips, and niece, Susan Stutts Ogle, and their families. Three stepsons also preceded Mrs. Landis in death, Joseph Landis Jr., James Landis and Carl Landis. The Cobb and Landis families are numerous, consisting of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. All enjoy gathering for birthdays and family reunions. In 1983, Mrs. Landis and her husband moved to Abernethy Laurels in Newton. She was very active in the retirement community, participating in many projects, visiting, crafts and holiday activities. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home, with the Revs. Larry Bolick and Bobby Petree officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to Abernethy Laurels Foundation, 102 Leonard Ave., Newton, N.C. 28658 or Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 2613 Wesley Chapel Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
