Billy Mauney Obituary

TAYLORSVILLE - Billy "Bill" Lester Mauney, 91, of N.C. 90 West in Taylorsville, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Iredell Memorial Hospital He was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Catawba County to the late Ewell Lester Mauney and Anna Wilson Mauney. He was a member of East Taylorsville Baptist Church. He graduated from Balls Creek High School. After attending George Washington University, Wake Forest College and Lenoir-Rhyne College, he returned to the area and opened two men's clothing stores, one in Statesville and one in Newton. During that time, he met and married Virginia Price Mauney, to whom he was married for 58 years, of Taylorsville and Statesville. After serving in World War II, the Mauneys settled in Taylorsville and opened City Cleaners, a longtime, well-known family business on East Main Avenue Drive. It served the community for 54 years before closing in 2003. A well-known civic and community leader, Mauney served as member and chairman of the Alexander County school board in the 1960s and '70s. For many years, he was a director and then chairman, of the Taylorsville Savings and Loan Association. In addition, he was active in the Taylorsville Lions Club and Alexander County Democratic Party. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife in 2002. Survivors include a son, Bill L. Mauney II and wife, Debbie, of Lumberton; a daughter, Jennifer Mauney Mascott and husband, Tom, of Columbia, Md.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Adams Funeral Home chapel, by the Revs. Jamie Steele and Mark Marshall. Burial will be in Taylorsville City Cemetery. The U.S. flag will be presented by members of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 84. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Adams Funeral Home.
