Bobbie Bumgarner Obituary

"Bobbie Jean" Bumgarner GRANITE FALLS Mrs. "Bobbie Jean" Burns Bumgarner, 80, of Granite Falls entered the presence of her Savior Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a brief period of illness. She was born in the Dudley Shoals Community of Caldwell County to the late Clyde Henry and Laura Williams Burns on Dec. 6, 1930. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Bobby Hugh Bumgarner; an infant son, Michael, and a brother, Albert W. "Red" Burns. Mrs. Bumgarner is survived by one sister, Rilla B. Phillips, of Granite Falls, and five children and their spouses, Warren Bumgarner, of Granite Falls; Karen and her husband, Edney Hudson, of Hickory; Mark Bum-garner; Lana and her husband, John Beard, and Laura Bumgarner, all of Granite Falls. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Brandon and his wife, Kelly Bumgarner, of Stanley; Ashley Bum-garner and Hunter Speagle, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Eric and his wife, Holly Beard, of Grassy Creek; Hillary and her husband, Derek Philyaw, of Granite Falls; Seth Beard, of Granite Falls; and Eliza, Sayer, and Colen Hudson, of Hickory; three great-grand-children, Macie Beard; Ava Philyaw; Kylie Bum-garner; a nephew, Garry Phillips and his wife, Brenda, of Greensboro; her nieces, Loretta and her husband, Micheal Triplett; Paula P. Lynn, of Granite Falls; her former daughter in-law, Heidi, and her husband, Joe Piazza, of Granite Falls, and, lastly, her beloved best friend of 31 years, Ann Hufham, of Hickory. Bobbie was a graduate of Granite Falls High School class of 1949. She delighted in planning and attending class reunions. She once planned and successfully executed a reunion of her first grade class at Dudley Shoals Elementary which the Hickory Daily Record deemed front- page news worthy on June 6, 2005. Bobbie worked many years as a seamstress in textiles; clothing and manufacturing. She later retired from J.C. Penny Company's accounting department in 1992. Our mother was loved by those who knew her and she will be greatly missed. She leaves behind a legacy of a warm, welcoming home and country cooking with an understanding ear to all who entered. We, her family, wish to extend our sincerest gratitude to those who have prayed for her and our family during her illness. Bobbie was a lifelong active member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Dudley Shoals. Her family will receive friends at Ebenezer today, Sunday, Oct. 30, from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m., after which the funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Eric Lane. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church building fund or The American Lung Association. Mackie Funeral Home is serving the family. You may view the obituary online at www.mackiefh.com

Karen and Edney, So sorry to hear about your mother. Although I did not know her, she had to be a pretty wonderful mother to have raised you. It is hard to give them up but we know they are in a better place.

With love, Peggy and Larry (Greensboro)

I will always remember the warmth and love felt when I would visit Bobbie Jean's house during my teenage years. My husband and I both were guest in her home many times when we were first married. She treated both of us like one of her own children. I will always remember some of the advise that she gave both of us. My thoughts and prayers are with her children and grandchildren. She was a loving mother and friend to all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
