Dena Marie (alias ~huChanti Lautae) Roby, 56, of Hickory , passed away Monday, March 2, 2020, at home.

Born May 27, 1963, ~hu was the daughter of the late Gloria Freeman and Albert Freeman. In addition to her parents, ~hu was preceded in death by her late husband, Tom Roby; twin sister, Kailahe (Dona) Freeman; and three brothers, John Freeman, Phil Freeman, and Craig Freeman; and granddog, Macy.

~hu was born and spent her youth in Santa Rosa, Calif. She is a graduate from San Diego State University with a degree in psychology and worked as a counselor for the Veterans Affairs and Halliburton. She was very involved with the Patriot Guard Riders, the American Legion Riders, and the Women's Auxiliary; who were active escorts for U.S. veterans' funerals. She loved to volunteer her time and energy anywhere she was needed. ~hu loved to ride her motorcycle with her husband. She was an avid reader, and loved working on bead work, especially for native regalia and she loved listening to her wind chimes. She adored and was adored by her family and many friends. She will be deeply and forever missed.

~hu is survived by two daughters, Kristina Roby-Lynch and son-in-law, Joshua Lynch of Bryson City, and Alberta Roby of the home; niece, Elizabeth Clinger of Tustin, Calif.; nephew, Wesley Waters of Englewood, Colo.; her beloved dogs, Naha, Faun, Anubis, and Winter; and one granddog, Brannon.

"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."

A memorialservice will be held at a later date.
