Jane Long Choate

March 26, 1943 - October 17, 2021

Jane Long Choate, 78, of Hickory, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021, at her residence.

She was born and raised in Sylva, March 26, 1943, to the late John Robert Long and Dixie Henson Long. Jane had graduated from Western Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in education and went back later to instruct the Leadership Conference at WCU. She spent most of her teaching career at West Alexander Middle School in Taylorsville, where she retired. She was an avid reader, bridge player, as well as, a crossword and puzzle lover. She loved spending time at her mountain house in Cashiers.

She is survived by her children, Julie C. Fotheringham and husband, Chip of Hickory, and Hyde Choate and wife, Donna of Alpharetta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Wil Choate of Knoxville, Tenn., and Olivia and Charlotte Choate, both of Alpharetta.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service. Masks are required during all services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Park Rd., Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209.

The family would like to thank her caregiver, Sherry Lowrance, for her loving care.
