Jane B. Turner

GRANITE FALLS - Jane Burns Turner, 78, of Granite Falls, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at her residence. She was born March 10, 1931, in Caldwell County to the late Lester Leroy "Jake" Burns and Letha Sherrill Burns. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L.E. Turner, and a sister, Anne Burns Hudson. Jane was a graduate of Appalachian State University, where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees. She retired from Hickory Public Schools, where she was an English teacher for 32 1/2 years and a guidance counselor for 8 1/2 years. In Heidelberg, Germany, she taught for one year at the U.S. Army Base American High School. She was a lifelong member of Grace Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served as organist for a number of years. Survivors include her two sons, Bryan K. Turner and Sean C. Turner, both of Granite Falls; a grandson, Bryan L. Turner of Granite Falls; nephew, Lee S. Hudson of Lenoir; and two aunts, Velma Hafer of Hickory and Rachel Bumgarner of Granite Falls. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Grace Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Norman Hubbard officiating. The family will receive friends today, Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St., NW, Lenoir, N.C. 28645; American Heart Association, 222 S.
