Jasper Richard Raines III, 81, of Hickory, NC, and Folly Beach, SC, passed away on October 16, 2025.
Ric was born on April 2, 1944, in Gainesville, GA, to the late Jasper Richard Raines Jr. (J.R.) and Katherine Elizabeth Raines (Beth). He graduated from Cherokee High School in Canton, GA, and went on to earn his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
After college, Ric held a variety of engineering and management roles before purchasing Bakers Waste Equipment in 2001. At BWE, he discovered his true calling as a business owner and leader. Ric was passionate about the people he worked with and deeply committed to the quality and integrity of the products his company produced. His leadership was defined by hard work, determination, and fairness. He inspired loyalty and respect, and many employees credit their own success to his mentorship and belief in them.
In 1978, Ric married the love of his life, Lin Raines. Together they raised two daughters, Lindsay and Angie, and built a home filled with love, laughter, conversation, and music. Ric was a devoted family man who showed his love in quiet strength and steady presence. His greatest joy came from time spent with family-especially around the dinner table and during moments shared with his four grandchildren, Grayson, Raines, Emilia, and Reid, who affectionately called him "Big." Ric often said that the greatest gift we can share with one another is our time - and he lived that belief fully.
Ric is also survived by his loving sister, Nance Haney of San Antonio, TX, and his brother, Charles Raines of Canton, GA, as well as many nieces and nephews who also lovingly knew him as "Big." Ric looked forward to summer vacations together in Folly Beach, a continuing tradition of his family.
Ric will be remembered for his big personality, genuine kindness, and unwavering integrity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew him.
A celebration of Ric's life will be held on November 23, 2025, at Ric's home in Hickory, NC.
