Jean Sick DeVito
February 23, 1939 - January 2, 2021
Jean Sick DeVito passed away peacefully at Carolina Caring Hospice House in Hickory, Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. She is now rejoicing with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her beloved Johnny D.
Jean was born Feb. 23, 1939, in North Hornell, N.Y., the daughter of Wilson and Aldene Sick.
She lived in upstate New York until 1977, when she and her young family relocated to the Dallas, Texas, area. Jean attended Alfred State College where she received an Associate Degree as a medical secretary. She began her career at Strong Memorial Hospital, working for a psychiatrist. Later, she worked at General Dynamics, where she served as the administrative assistant to the president and where she also met her beloved husband, John Frank DeVito. She worked as a homemaker, raising her two beloved daughters, Jennifer and Jolene, and as they grew older, she enjoyed a career as a medical office manager. Prior to her retirement, she also volunteered as an office manager for Bethany Christian Services, where her daughter, Jennifer, worked as a director.
Throughout her life, Jean enjoyed sports and was a passionate supporter of the Dallas Cowboys. Jean gave generously and sacrificially of herself to everyone she loved. A skilled organizer and manager, she served as a volunteer chaperone for the touring Dallas Girls Chorus while her daughter, Jolene, was a member, and also chauffeured Jolene to many other acting and performing opportunities in her youth. She lived for a time with both of her girls, supporting Jolene in Austin while she was in college and Jennifer in North Carolina while her young children participated in multiple therapies. Throughout the years, she found great joy in hosting four of her nieces and nephews as residents in her home as their lives and careers took them through Texas. Always up for an adventure, Jean and John happily served as Texas tour guides to countless friends and family who paid them a visit. She was proud to be a member of the First Christian Church of Gainesville, Texas, where she served alongside her husband with the Souper Bowl Sunday charity event, the seniors program and the youth, and later a member of Corinth Reformed Church of Hickory. As her family members often say, she was a truly loving and generous person and was the epitome of a life well-lived.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than 53 years, John Frank DeVito, who she married in Rochester, N.Y., April 4, 1964. They raised two accomplished and beloved daughters: Jennifer DeVito Stephens of Hickory and Jolene DeVito Yarbrough of Carrollton, Texas. Jean also leaves behind her respected and beloved sons-in-law, Kevin Stephens and Russell Yarbrough; as well as seven precious grandchildren: Michael, Brooke, Cooper, Ben and Sam Stephens and Carson and Avery Yarbrough. Jean will be dearly missed by her beloved siblings: brother, Wilson "Bill" Sick Jr. and sister-in-law, Marylou Sick of Jacksonville, Fla.; and sister, Barbara Harris and brother-in-law, Fred Harris of Arkport, N.Y. She also enjoyed the love of ten beloved nieces and nephews and their many children.
Memorial services will be held in the future when it is safe for all to gather.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Corinth Reformed Church, 150 16th Ave. NW, Hickory, NC 28601.
