Marjorie Leeper Obituary
May 27, 1926 - March 11, 2025
Marjorie Gail (Wirtner) Leeper, 98, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Conover Nursing and Rehab.
Born May 27, 1926 in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of the late Irma Schmidt Wirtner and Herbert Gould Wirtner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Janice (Wirtner) Malvin and a nephew, Andrew P. Malinowycz.
Marje graduated from Hamburg High School in Hamburg, NY, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY with an Associate Degree and George Mason University in Fairfax, VA with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology.
She went on to work for the YWCA in Boston, MA, HEW (Health, Education, Welfare) in Washington, DC, New Hanover County Department of Social Services in Wilmington, NC and the New Hanover County Library in Wilmington, NC.
Marje loved to travel and made several trips to Europe with England being her favorite place to visit. She had a passion for reading and enjoyed knitting (knitted sweaters for children and donated them to children in need overseas). She also enjoyed art, music and volunteer work.
She is survived by her son, David Leeper and wife Renee Oxford Leeper; grandson, Christopher Scott Leeper; and two nieces: Judith Evangelus and Marci Malinowycz.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory is serving the Leeper family.

Marje was a wonderful volunteer at the Cape Fear Literacy Council for about 20 years. Her ESL students loved her - and so did we all. My condolences to her family as you celebrate her long life and kind heart.
