August 1, 1944 - January 19, 2025
Thomas Rhodes Smyre, 80, of Hickory, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
He was born on August 1, 1944, to the late Coy Emmitt Smyre and Johnsie Rhodes Smyre in Catawba County.
Along with his parents; his sister, Lynda Lea Smyre DeHart preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Joice; son, Greg Smyre; grandchildren, Greg Smyre II and wife Kerby, Madalyn Abbot husband Alex, Miranda Smyre; and his great-grandchildren, Gregory Thomas Smyre III, Clarence "Clay" Ray Smyre.
A funeral will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Hickory Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Pastor John Sanders will officiate the service. Burial will follow at St. Stephens Lutheran Church Mo-Synod Cemetery.

It saddens me to see where Tommy has passed away. He and Joyce used to be my neighbors. When I think of Tommy, I think of him pulling my Cutlass up the hill where it had iced over. His last words to me, when you crest the hill, do not lock down on your brakes. So what did I do, I almost put them through the floorboard. Luckily, the snow was deep enough , it had filled up the ditch beside the road, and I just slid across the field. Rest in Piece, Sir, and thanks again for helping me that day. God Bless your family and friends during this sad time.
