Virginia Elrod James, 79, of Newton, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born Nov. 18, 1942, in Syracuse, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth H. and Virginia Leona Horn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L. Fred James.

Virginia was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed shopping, traveling to the beach, and puzzles. She was also an avid dog lover.

Survivors include her children, Howard "Ty" Elrod and wife, Sandra, of Hickory, Pamela Charles of Newton, and Laurie Hoffman and husband, Chris, of Lake Wylie, S.C.; adopted daughter, Missy Walters and husband, Tommy, of Lake City, Fla.; six grandchildren, Mandi Elrod, Madison Wilkinson, Katie Charles, Ryker Yoak, Ethan Woody, and Zach Hoffman; first husband and father of her children, Richard Elrod of Hickory; sister, Suzzanne King and husband, Harry, of St. Augustine, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the chapel of Bass-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell Makant officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., prior to services.
