William Reginald Sigmon Sr.

September 7, 1935 - January 22, 2022

William Reginald Sigmon Sr., 86, of Hickory, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, after a period of declining health, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1935, he was the third of eight children born to the late Herbert Wiley Sigmon Sr. and Catherine Clara Harris Sigmon.

Married to Evelyn Jeanette Starnes Sigmon, June 1, 1958, Mr. Sigmon has two children, William Reginald Sigmon Jr. and wife, Lisa, and Detra Sigmon Lory and husband, Andy; and three grandchildren, Forrest Scott Sigmon, Bryce William Sigmon, and William Nolan Lory.

William "Bill" R. Sigmon Sr. attended North Carolina Public Schools and graduated from Claremont Central High School (Hickory High School). In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and served four years in active duty and two years in the reserves. He trained as an air traffic controller, and reached the highest rank of sergeant.

He attended Lenoir-Rhyne from June 1958 to July 1960, attended Wake Forest University School of Law from 1960 to 1963, and he was admitted to the private practice of law in Hickory in August 1963. In addition, he was admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court, served as judge pro tem and solicitor pro tem in the Hickory Recorder's Court. He served as the large member of the Board of Education for the Hickory Administrative School Unit for four years, and two which was chairman. He served on the Board of Directors and as president of Lake Hickory Country, was a member of Granite Falls Optimist Club and Poovey's Grove Puritan Club, member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was inducted into the North Carolina Bar Association General Practice Hall of Fame in 2005. He was the founding member of Sigmon, Clark, Mackie, Hanvey & Ferrell, P.A. Attorneys at Law. He was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church since September 1969, former member of Highland Baptist Church and Poovey's Grove Baptist Church and served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and various other offices for more than 50 years.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Viewmont Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Andrew Rawls officiating. A private burial will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Viewmont Baptist Church, 1246 2nd St. NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
