Barry O'Connor Obituary

Barry Thomas O'Connor was born July 15, 1956, in Quantico, Virginia. He died July 28, 2024 at home in Morongo Valley. He was 68.
Barry was born with cerebral palsy, which hindered his ability to walk, but he never let that slow him down. What he lacked in leg strength, he excelled in upper body strength. He had a handshake like Vise Grips.
In 1962 his father was stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine base. Barry attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. At a very young age he took an interest in electronics. He started disassembling radios and TVs to learn how they worked. The family was transferred to San Diego in 1966. After graduating from high school, he took a two-year course in electronics at San Diego City College.
Barry returned to Twentynine Palms and started Mojave Electronics, a small repair business. There he met up with Jay Corbin from KDHI, the local radio station. He worked a deal with Jay to maintain and repair the transmitter and equipment for the radio station. Barry would also travel to Lancaster to maintain radio stations owned by the same company as KDHI. It was there he met his future wife, Cindy Davis, who was a disc jockey at the station. They were married in 1989.
In 1984 Barry became the chief engineer for KDES Radio in Palm Springs. In 2001 Barry developed kidney failure. He was on dialysis until his wife Cindy discovered her blood type was compatible with his. In 2004 she donated one of her kidneys to Barry. Through all of his health challenges Barry continued to work full time and also enjoyed taking road trip vacations with Cindy and their German shepherd "kids" in their truck, camper, boat and in recent years their old Jeep C.J.
As the years went by, Barry's disability became more difficult to deal with. He was becoming more dependent on the wheelchair. In 2016, after almost 40 years of hard work, Barry retired. He continued his hobbies of working on electronics and tinkering on his vehicles at his home shop.
In April of this year Barry was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. Due to his kidney transplant he was on anti-rejection drugs. This did not allow chemotherapy or radiation. He was in home hospice care for the next three months until his body gave out. His devoted wife Cindy was there by his side, caring for him through the whole ordeal. He died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him. He will be missed.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Helen O'Connor, and his little sister, Siobhan O'Connor.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy, his brothers, Bryan, Mike and Tim O'Connor, and his sister Anita O'Connor Cordell, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church. 7495 Church St., in Yucca Valley
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center in Riverside or the Joshua Tree No-Kill Shelter.

Worked as a DJ for many years and always looked forward to seeing Barry. He did engineering for many of the stations I worked for in the hi and low desert. Always loved his stories and strong fortitude about life. Amazing man and so glad to have known him.

B T O´ C !, thank you for your years on this planet, you definitely made an impact on everyone and everything around you. From the very first time meeting you until the last time we spoke you never failed to take the time for conversation, a laugh or to share some inspiration.
Your love of family , friends and all living things was beyond question and showed not only through words but in everything you did...
When you announced your wedding, I knew she must be someone special and it was wonderful to be able to celebrate your wedding and to meet the woman who would go above and beyond expectations of a life partner.
Life is a series of blessings and challenges and you lived it in a way that that showed others how good it can be.... Thanks for being you...

Miss you, Uncle Barry. I still remember that Ralphie Night when my mom and dad got you and Aunt Cindy a mini version of the leg lamp and dad rolled it in on the two wheeler in a wooden crate that he'd made himself and you and Aunt Cindy cried laughing. Also a few Christmases ago, you were my Secret Santa and you got me that book lover themed blanket that wasn't even on my list. It's still on my bed, it's one of my favorites, and I cherish it even more now. Love and miss you.

Barry will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Cindy, his brothers and sister and many extended family members and friends. He was an amazing person to be around. So very kind, with a great sense of humor and personally resilient even though faced with many obstacles. The disabilities did not stop him from enjoying his hobbies such as working on cars and tinkering in his shop. It was truly remarkable how he accomplished these tasks by using his ingenuity.

Barry was such a great guy. There are no words to express how much he is missed and always will be. I have a beautiful vision of Barry in heaven with his folks and sister, experiencing (and loving!) his new legs! He wouldn´t want to come back to this rock for anything! He´ll see the rest of us soon enough. I´ll always think of Barry when Notre Dame is playing. I loved when Barry said as only he could "Katy bar the door!"

You never lost your sense of humor, Barry! Even toward the end, after your last hospital stay, you made jokes. Cindy was making you a sandwich and my mom, for whatever reason, thought you needed your food pureed, so she asked Cindy if she was going to put it in the blender. Out of the blue, you said, "Oh yeah, I always use a blender to make my sandwiches." You and I had a good laugh over that one! Thanks Barry, I'll keep that memory for as long as I live. I will miss everything about you.

To Cindy our heart goes out to you for your great loss bless you. My wife Tracy and I always waited for our bus trips to Laughlin so we could catch up with our old friends. Barry and Cindy being a must see. For 3 days we would visit and in those times we realized what a special person Barry was. Super smart person I would always bug him on what his job consisted of and always we needed a new story from him. Then we would say goodbye at Tommy's in Barstow to the family and wait for the next visit. I will never forget how terrified I was to hear about the bee's going after him you need to be a superman to get thru that episode. God love him and take care of him. Bob and Tracy.

I will miss him terribly. He was so strong even though he was born with serious health issues. I will remember him fondly, caring for their "babies" . He was a great friend even though we were living so far apart. Rest in peace my dear friend and protec Cindy and your family from above.

All my love to Cindy and the O´Connor family Barry was a wonderful man and I have wry fond memories of him through out my childhood.

A favorite memory I have of Barry is that soft spot he always had for horses and dogs! He accompanied Cindy and I on many a horse adventure, and always voted yes on a "let´s get him!" when a horse needed rehoming. He enjoyed how animals found him magnetic, sensing his gentle manner. I enjoyed our front porch hangouts after our horseback rides, and his easy laugh. He was a strong and courageous man that conquered challenges without complaint, and always lived to share some pretty incredible stories, like surviving the killer bee attack!
I´m honored to have great memories of time spent with Barry, and know he passed as any of us would hope to...peacefully at home after being surrounded with love, visits, story telling, and memories shared by loved ones at his last birthday
