Brian Smith Obituary

Brian Gamble Smith, 37, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, in Dallas, Texas.
Brian was born June 16, 1971, in Logan, Utah, to Benton and Lynda Smith, the second of seven children. He attended school in Fillmore, Utah, and Afton, Wyo., graduating from Star Valley High School. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas Houston East Mission. He attended Dixie State College, Utah State University and then received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from the University of Phoenix in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He met and married the love of his life, Angela Koerner, of Logan, Utah, on July 7, 1993, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were later blessed with five beautiful children: Tyler, 9; Brooklynn, 7; Brandon, 4; Ben, 2; and Nathan, 8 months.
Brian worked for the Utah Highway Patrol from 1996 to 2008. He especially loved the years he worked on the governor's detail for Utah governors Mike Leavitt and Olene Walker. While he was working in the Highway Patrol the family lived in Draper, Lehi and Herriman, Utah. They moved to Keller, Texas, in May of this year, where Brian worked in sales.
Brian loved spending time with his family. His children brought a lot of joy to his life and he loved playing with them. Their accomplishments meant a lot to him, and he took great pride in sharing stories of their many talents. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, riding horses and anything to do with the outdoors. Brian's dad and brothers - his best friends - could always be counted on to be adventure partners on his many excursions.
Brian could always bring a smile to others and lift their spirits with his sense of humor and quick wit. He enjoyed being the big brother of the family and loved to tease his siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Angela Smith, and their five children, of Keller, Texas; his parents, Benton and Lynda Smith, of Preston, Idaho; and his siblings, Lisa Hoth, Brett Smith, Braydon Smith, Laradene Murphy, Bracken Smith and Lacey Klingler; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dear Angie,
You are my visiting teacher here in Texas. I remember the day you spent at my home and we talked about all the "trials" we both seemed to be going through. I only have 8 children, but you...I had no idea. My heart goes out to you and your family and Brians' family at this time. We all send our love and prayers to you from Texas. Please let me know how I can help.
May the Lord comfort and shield you with his love at this time and always. Know you can lean on any of us here and we are there for you in any way! We love you and pass no judgement only support and love.
May God strengthen and comfort you at this tender time. Call any time.

Angie althought I did not know your good husband, I have had casual discussion with you while making appointments to meet with your wonderful father. I have had the good fortune of knowing your brother Jonathan, and your sweet - beautiful Mother. You have been "blessed with goodly parents", and a wonderful family.

My heart, and that of my wife Jeanette, are heavy with sorrow for you and your beautiful children. I can not find words to describe the sorrow we feel for your loss, and pray that our Lords blessings will comfort you and your precious little ones - always.

I had the pleasure of meeting Brian and working in SL Co. with him for a couple of years. We had many conversations during that time. I remember giving him a hard time (in jest) when he got promoted to go work for the Governor. He took it in stride with a smile as always. He was a great guy and was always very amicable. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Angie,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. We've thought a lot about you guys over the years since we moved out of the Davencourt townhomes. We've always thought highly of the two of you and will miss Brian. We really wish we would have kept in better contact. We pray for your peace and comfort. If there is anything we can do let us know. We love you.

I work for the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office and am the Law Enforcement Liaison. I rode with Brian on more than one occassion, in fact, the picture in the Deseret News is on the day I rode with him (motorcycle accident on I-80 in the Eastbound land over 900 East - he left to possibly notify the family that the rider might not live). I am still saddened by his death. I told my wife he was one of the best officers with whom I spent my time. Our prayers are with your family. He truly was a great example in the law enforcement field and I personally will miss him.
