Dale Pingree Obituary

Dale Hal Pingree passed away peacefully Friday, April 8, 2022. He was 86 years old.

Hal was born May 23, 1935, to Dale Hooper Pingree and Gladys Estelle Minshew in Morgan, Utah. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his wife, Barbra Ann Schaub. He is survived by his only sibling, Carolyn (Brice) Wilson. Hal has four sons: Dale Scott (Karen), James Wesley (Roxanne), Jed Schaub (Linda), David Conrad (Gretchen), 19 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren & 1 great-great grandchild.

Hal graduated from Logan High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He held lots of jobs including sheep herder, movie theatre usher, bowling alley pin setter and his favorite, working for his dad as a bank teller. He attended Utah State University and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. After his freshman year grades came in, he decided to put his pool cue down and get more serious about life, so he enlisted in the Air Force with a fraternity buddy without telling his parents his plans. Before he left for basic training in Georgia, he "pinned" his Delta Chi sweetheart, "Babs", who he had dated since the junior high, hoping she would wait for him to return. Upon hearing she may have been on a date or two, he drove cross country without stopping to arrive home just in time for the holidays and asked her to marry him on Christmas Eve. She said yes. They were married in the Logan LDS temple on June 20, 1956. Promptly after, they left for Valdosta, Georgia where Hal trained as a Cadet Fighter Pilot for the U.S. Airforce. He then received a full commission, was assigned rank of lieutenant, and transferred to Cape Cod as a fighter inceptor pilot. After his honorable discharge from military service, he and Babs returned home to Logan to finish their degrees and graduate together.

Out of college, Dale took a job as a Boeing Engineer which moved the couple to Seattle, Washington where they lived for 55 years. Shortly after moving, Hal missed flying and soon took a position as an Airline Pilot with West Coast Airlines. The airlines changed throughout the years as Hal rose in ranks and seniority as a top Captain, retiring for Northwest Airlines on his birthday in May of 1995.

Hal raised his four boys in Bellevue, Washington, and when he wasn't flying, he was coaching. Hal coached his sons' baseball, football, and basketball teams. He is well remembered for his emphasis on the basics and displaying good sportsmanship and was proud of his sons' successes on the field. Hal was as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he is known for his leadership in the ward family and lending his coaching ability to church sports leagues, playing softball himself well into his 50's. He loved to play golf with his close friends in the Seattle area, but most of all he loved to spend time with Babs and his boys, traveling, boating, fishing, golfing, and going to Mariners games.

In 2016, Hal and Babs returned to their hometown of Logan, Utah to live out the rest of their years enjoying family and friends. Hal loved good music and especially enjoyed exposing his grandkids to folk music, opera, and Broadway musicals, playing loud songs on his computer in the kitchen and singing along. Depending on your association, you either called him Mr. Pingree, Dale, Hal, Captain, Dad, Coach, Grandpa or Sam. Choose wisely.

Hal lost his wife of 68 years just 6 weeks prior to his passing. Since their first date in junior high, they have been by each other's side. Their love story is an inspiration to all as they are now together again, happy and healthy, for time and all eternity.
