Edna Berg

1933 - 2022

Edna Berg died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, September 19, 2022, in North Ogden, Utah. She was known for her artistry, integrity, and devotion to her family and church. Edna was born January 9, 1933, in Ramah, New Mexico. As a child, she worked on ranches with her father, riding horses, building fences, and tending livestock. She attended schools in Ramah, Gallup, and Farmington and took lessons in oil painting. After graduating from Farmington High School, she worked as a bank poster and teller. Edna became a masterful artist, producing numerous beautiful oil paintings and published illustrations. She also became an excellent carpenter, making many improvements to the family home. Edna was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young adult, she served as a full-time missionary in the Northern States Mission, where, in addition to proselyting, she was mission recorder, publisher of a monthly newsletter, and secretary to the mission president's wife. Later in life, Edna served missions with her husband in England, New Jersey, and India. As a humanitarian missionary in India, she illustrated speech development handbooks in English and Telugu and was an art professor at Osmania University. Edna was dedicated to family history research and worked for years in the family history center in Logan and served in the temple as coordinator for the handicapped. Throughout her life, she served faithfully in whatever capacity was asked of her.

Edna married Frederick Sven Berg in the Mesa Arizona Temple on May 18, 1959. She helped Fred obtain his PhD at Southern Illinois University, typing and illustrating his dissertation. They later lived in Salem, Oregon; Dearborn, Michigan; Logan, Utah; and finally in the dream home they built along Summit Creek in Smithfield, Utah. She performed the role of general contractor and did much of the construction herself. Edna credited her long life to working outdoors on their property. Edna was devoted to helping her children succeed in life. Under her guiding influence, each of her sons became Eagle Scouts. In 1983, her family was selected as Cache County's family of the year. Edna is survived by her loving husband, Fred; their sons, Sven (A'Lynn), Louis (Terrisa), Glenn (Lavon), Leonard (Karen), and Nathan (Mitch); their daughter, Fina (Jed); 28 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Myrtle Clawson; two brothers, one unnamed and the other Louis; three sisters, Betty Rose (Al) Dustin, Loral (David) Erickson, and Inez Lorraine (Winfred) Tillman; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 28th at 11 am in the chapel located at 79 East 200 South, Smithfield, Utah. Burial at the Smithfield cemetery will follow the service.
