Leon Borne Jr. Obituary

Leon Lawrence Borne Jr. was born on June 22, 1938, and passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018, after a year-long battle with cancer. Leon is survived by his dedicated and loving wife of 60 years, Nettie Trosclair Borne and his five children; Natalie and husband, Danny Labat, Jessica and husband, Robert Perret, Andre' and wife, Carolyn, Agatha and husband, Bryan Pannagl, and Monica and husband, Garrett Haab. Leon is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Erin Labat Folse (Randy), Kevin Labat (Tiffany Loupe), Zoe Perret, Grant Borne, Max Perret, Adele Borne, Sophie Haab, Jack Pannagl, Aiden Haab, Amelia Haab and Abigayle Pannagl; and two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Lane Folse. He is survived by his brother, Donald J. Borne (Joycelyn) and their four children, Ross, Mark, Angelle, and Donald Jr.

Leon was preceded in death by his loving parents, Leon Lazare Borne and Denise Constant Borne.

Leon attended St. Joseph's Seminary as a boy, graduated from Thibodaux High School in 1954. He was a member of first graduating class of F.T. Nicholls Jr. College in 1956, earned his master's degree in Social Welfare from Louisiana State University and his doctorate degree in Counselor Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Through his years of work as a social worker for the Department of Welfare, an associate professor of special education at Nicholls State, a school board member for Lafourche Parish, assistant superintendent and state director of Special Education, and as a Louisiana state legislator, he fought tirelessly to help every child gain access to the education needed to better themselves, their families and their communities.

As a child, Leon enjoyed and excelled at playing baseball, and as a young man he spent countless hours coaching the Bayou Boeuf baseball team and helping the youth of his community to appreciate the importance of sports as well as education. Later in life he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in their sports programs and other activities. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and the outdoors in general and was proud to share this love with his family and friends at their cabin in Mississippi and their home in Kraemer.

Leon was a devout Catholic, devoted father and friend. He was admired and loved by many and will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Services were held Saturday, July 14, at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Kraemer. Visitation was at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m.

To the Borne Family:
I heard of Dr. Borne's Passing today and I am sending you all our prayers that God will hold you in the palm of HIs BIG hands and strengthen you at this time. I first met Leon when I became a guidance counselor and he was the Director of Student Services at the State Department of Education. He was an excellent leader and a good friend. I ended up working in that Bureau at the Department from 1978-1988 doing some of the initiatives that he established.

I was saddened this morning to learn of the death of my old friend Leon Borne. We were high school students together at Thibodaux High, where we played together on the high school baseball. After high school we were students together at Nicholls State. Later, we both served on the faculty of Nicholls State. I remember Leon as devoted husband and father, who served his community with vigor and enthusiasm throughout his life.
My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Nettie and family. May God bless you all during this time of sorrow.
