I was blessed when Annette and her family moved to Opelousas. Since that time, Annette and I have been blessed by God with a special friendship. I have watched Mark grow into a fine young man for the past 7 years. I admired him. He was always smiling, adventurous, hard working, kindhearted and wanted to do the right thing so that his parents would be proud of him. He was a wonderful young man because he had awesome parents who lavished tons of love on him and taught him right from wrong. I was looking forward to seeing what he would make of his life on earth. I knew that he was going to be an exceptional man because he was off to such a great start. It is easy to regret the years that he did not live on this earth but I know that Heaven is SO MUCH better than life on earth. I know that he lives on in Heaven and he is having much grander adventures than he could have ever had here. Even still, we are sad to see him go. I know that many people are grieving the loss of Mark. I am one of thousands who will be forever changed.
Annette and Rat, Kenneth and I are here for you anytime. We love you both. We are terribly sorry for this terrible tragedy. You have been in our prayers for the past month and you will continue to be in our prayers for a very long time.
For the Robertson family, Marmande family, classmates and all others who are grieving Mark's departure to Heaven, please accept our condolences and I pray that The Lord draw you close to His Side and give you comfort.

Mark is an exceptional person. Mark was a great Ranger. I loved watching him in Colorado, you could tell he was an only child because he was so content to be by himself, just to play and be a kid. I remember the spear he made that he threw at all sorts of things.

This year he was in my fourth period class is Multimedia,. He sat in the corner of the room and happily did his work with excellence. That was quite descriptive of Mark. He truly lived out Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

We had a project where I told the students to create their own gravestone using Photoshop, and write their own epitaph. Many students were repulsed by this idea, but I tried to point out to them that the scripture states in Ecclesiastes, “it is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of rejoicing because that is the end of all men and the wise take it to heart.” Mark made a small headstone and he put it in the midst of a graveyard, what I found strange about his project, is that you can't see his name or anything else unless you zoom in a lot. The only thing you see is 4 capital letters, a modern acronym: YOLO. You Only Live Once, Mark lived more in 17 years than many do in a lifetime. It also betrayed Mark's humility, he understood that your name was not important it was what you did that mattered.

Mark was an outspoken and straightforward speaker as well. I distinctly remember him graciously rebuking a classmate for their attitude. Mark would tell you like it is. I can't tell you how glad it makes me as a teacher to hear students speaking the truth like that in love.

Mark learned the lesson of Enoch, who walked and talked with God, and that is why I believe God took Mark from this world at a young age. Mark loved God and he loved his classmates. I believe that God will use the seed of his passing in the lives of those he touched to inspire them to do early what they otherwise may have never done, which is to love and serve God, as well as to recognize that You Only Live Once so you must live the time you have well.

Mark's life and death have inspired me to teach with greater excellence, and it is my fervent prayer that the flower he gave me at Senior Chapel will bloom over and over again in the lives of students who follow him, as a testimony to his life well lived.

"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

May God lift up your spirits in this time of tragedy.

"There is no way to remove the pain. The grief is real. The only sanity is to know, to believe, in a life beyond with you, when all the scales are righted and the sufferings are made good. We trust you and your promise that while this child's life on earth is done, his life beyond has just begun. With that release we lose him and let him go into your arms, then by faith receive in return the boundless comfort of your presence."

Shannon Guidry

May 25, 2014

I am in awe of the son you have raised. I can only imagine that God must have needed him in Heaven. Seems to me, young men like him are few and far between: such kindness, so intelligent, obviously devoted to God. Perhaps you have been raising him into that amazing young man so he can do great things in Heaven w God! Granted, he was taken way too soon from an earthly perspective. I KNOW he is in Heaven. He is smiling down on you right now; he's at peace. It's clear you possess strong faith; you instilled that in Mark. My deepest prayer is that your faith, friends, family, support systems will sustain you through this most difficult time. I'm struggling not to ask "why", so I can't begin to understand how difficult this must be for you. God bless you. My prayers stay with you continuously. Much love.
