Alice Thomas Obituary

Alice Crawford Thomas
1943-2022
Alice Crawford Thomas of Houston, spitfire and never-ending role model, died on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 after a six month illness. She is survived by her adoring husband and best friend of 56 years, Lewis Proctor (Terry) Thomas III; two devoted daughters, Kendall T. Scheffey and Kathleen S. Thomas, her loyal son-in-law Eric H. Scheffey; and four grandchildren, Heston T. Scheffey, Alice J. Scheffey, Sloan L. Woodberry and J. Carson Woodberry. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Crawford Wolff, Mary's husband David S. Wolff, and her sister-in-law Suzanne B. Crawford, wife of deceased brother, Walter J Crawford Jr.
Alice's life of exploration began in Beaumont, Texas. Her parents, Walter Joshua Crawford and Mary Edna McKallip Crawford, inspired in her a zest for life with a passion for the outdoors and lifelong learning. Educated at St. Stephens in Austin, she went on to become a Plan II Longhorn. Attending workshops and avidly reading, she continued to seek knowledge up to the day she died.
In 1965, she married Terry. After a year in Salt Lake City, they moved to Houston where Alice made her mark through her wide variety of talents and interests. She is remembered as a woman with boundless energy, a disarming smile, a great sense of humor, and strong ideals. Her unyielding curiosity even led to a proficiency in "Trucker Lingo" on the CB radio.
While raising her daughters, she actively engaged with Houston's civic and cultural organizations, including the Junior League, Texas Children's Hospital Asthma Clinic, Houston Ballet, the Jung Center, the Garden Club of Houston, Houston Center for Photography, the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice, and The Women's Institute. She served on the Board of FotoFest and most recently, on the Cultural Arts Council at U.T.'s College of Fine Arts.
A natural athlete and outdoorswoman, Alice was a remarkable skier, marathon runner (Boston, Dallas and Houston in noteworthy times), and could knock the cover off of a tennis ball. More recently, she tackled golf and unsurprisingly became a tournament player.
Alice spent summers in Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado where she summited 14'ers while identifying wildflowers. She was a master fly caster, tying her own flies, capturing not only every rainbow and brown trout in the Rockies and New Zealand, but also the elusive permut in Belize. Alice and Terry saw the world together, including adventures on six continents.
Even with all of her talents and interests, Alice's "Happy Place" was her garden. Excelling in horticulture with the Garden Club of Houston and the Garden Club of America, no one could compete with her succulents, which she collected from all over the country. After winning numerous awards for her plants, she proudly became a horticulture judge. Her final tribute to her garden was a new crepe myrtle planted in December.
With all of her accolades, Alice exemplified grace and dignity. She leaves her multitude of friends and family with the inspiration for hope and growth that she treasured in nature.
The family will host a celebration of Alice's life, a life very well lived, at a date to be announced. It was Alice's wish that any contributions to charity in her memory be sent to The Houston Botanic Garden, 8205 N. Bayou Drive, Houston, Texas 77017, or to any of the charities mentioned above.

What a beautiful obituary for Alice...truly captured the spirit of "Miss America". Terry, since we heard the news, Kaye and I have been reflecting on all the wonderful times we shared with you and Alice--skiing in Utah and Aspen, tennis in Houston, California, and Puerto Vallarta, your last visit to our cabin in Idaho, and so much more. Despite losing your family CEO, we know you and the girls will always carry Alice in your hearts...she will never be far away. We wish you all the love and peace possible.

It was a wonderful privilege having Alice on FotoFest's Board of Directors. Her wit and intelligence were great assets to all the discussions, decisions and programs we had. She was not only involved with both our creative art photography events and the Biennials, but also the collectors' programs and FotoFest's in-school literacy through photography education program.
As an active participant in our international trips to Paris and Prague, she enriched each trip with her humor, irreverence and curiosity. She hosted wonderful dinners at her house, became a friend to many photographers and created a great collection of photographic art. I miss her, and so does FotoFest as a whole. Sje was a great asset to the creative community of Houston.

As a child. Alice and I shared membership in The Magnolia Jr. Garden Club in Beaumont, Texas. We were charter members and had great leaders and gardening experiences. I became a free lance florist in later years and was frequently asked to come and arrange flowers in the home for Alice´s parents. What a great family ! Alice had a great life and treasured the blessings she´s received. I was happy to be her friend. I know she will be missed .

I am very sad to hear this news of my dear friend Alice
who was a bright shining star in my life and so many other friends who loved her. I knew Alice through the Garden Club of Houston and had the fortunate opportunity to work closely with Alice on
several projects. Alice was a great mentor, always willing to share her kind support and gardening knowledge.
I will miss you Alice. Your infectious smile, twinkling eyes and quick sense of humor always made my day brighter and happier as there was always laughter with Alice. Our garden club has lost a very special beloved member.
I send my deepest sympathies to Terry and all of Alice´s family.

I am just sick about Alice´s death. It is hard to believe as she was so vibrant. Seeing her in Colorado in the summers was such a delight.
My first sleepover was at her house in Bmt and her sense of fun was enacted when they poured water on me as I was an early sleeper!
Her smile was infectious-but not that time!
Rest In Peace, dear Alice

Jack and I are sending Terry, Kendall, Eric, Kathleen, each of Alice's dear grandchildren and her entire family our love, prayers and condolences.
We will truly miss our precious friend, Alice with her boundless love, thoughtfulness, vitality, sense of humor and fun, creativity and generosity!
It was a tremendous joy and an honor for me to play tennis for many years with Alice on the River Oaks River Rats Houston Ladies Tennis Association team. Alice often served as our intrepid Captain always inspiring and challenging her teammates with great joy and competitive sportsmanship.
Alice hosted incredible team Halloween costume parties which were huge fun with competitive games, prizes, and delicious food.
I remember Fridays traditionally being homemade gumbo days at the Thomas household since Terry especially loved it. Alice usually had a pot simmering on the stove.
Alice's family was always foremost in her thoughts and life, and I loved hearing about their amazing skiing, golfing, hunting, and hiking trips together all over the world. It's hard to imagine anyone living a more fulfilling, accomplished life that Alice and she will live on in our thoughts and memories.
With love always,
Jack and Sandra Kamrath
