Alvin Horne Obituary

Alvin "Andy" Andrews Horne
05/04/1940 - 06/10/2024
Alvin Andrews Horne (Andy) passed away surrounded by his family in Houston on June 10, 2024. He was born on May 4, 1940, in Houston to Henry Crowell Horne Sr. and Marie Eloise Wedin Horne.
Andy graduated from Lamar High School in 1958, from The University of Texas at Austin, Plan II with honors, and The University of Texas School of Law in 1964. Andy then joined the Harris County District Attorney's Office as a prosecutor.
In 1967, Andy enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and Navy Justice School. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Princeton (LPH-5) as legal officer and as Officer of the Deck for the Apollo 10 recovery.
Andy then received command of PCF-59 (a Swift Boat) and was assigned to Coastal Squadron One at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam and later to Coastal Division 13 at Cat Lo. During this time Andy met his brother-in-arms, William Killough "Bill" Lannom, their friendship solidifying on November 11, 1969, in an action for which Andy, Bill and Frank Mueller were awarded Bronze Stars with Valor. He later described this as the most exciting time of his life (written, of course, before he met Sylvia).
Thankfully for many, he was introduced to Miss Sylvia Pool from Muleshoe, Texas, who captured his restless heart leading him to many wonderful adventures over the next 52 years. They married on September 25, 1971.
Andy joined the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas as a Federal prosecutor. While his service to country and community were a large part of who Andy was, it was his commitment to mentoring young men that was at his core. His father died very young and the mentorship of his beloved uncle, Alvin Anderson Horne was significant; leading him to also mentor young men. In addition to his sons and grandson, a few who may attribute a portion of their direction to Andy are: Ronny Blevins, Maxwell Rothaus, Seth Stone, and Matt Carver. Andy also enlisted help from his closest friends, too many to list, but, Ted Hertz, Joe Doucette, Charles Crady, Ted Houghton, and Bill Lannom were mainstays and fostered a spirit of mentorship.
Andy was a great storyteller. His "Decent Men Series: In The Company of Decent Men and Mixed Company" are excellent reads. Be careful, or you'll end up in my novel, was so accurate. If he knew you, he likely studied your nature and you helped shape his characters.
Andy is survived by his wife, Sylvia Pool Horne; their sons, Anderson McClain Horne and wife Tiffany Lynn Rhodes-Horne and grandson, Henry Rhodes Horne; and John Boston Horne and wife Emily Witt Horne and granddaughters, Georgina Sevier Horne and Margot Eloise Horne; his niece, nephews and families, along with many relatives of the Horne, Wedin and Pool family with their many branches, as well as many lifelong friends.
Andy's family would like to thank the physicians and staff of the Debakey VA Medical Center for their care in Andy's final days, including Dr. Bryan Sowers and his team.
Visitation will be at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston, Texas on Friday, July 19, 2024, 5:00-7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, 6221 Main Street, Houston, Texas on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at ten o'clock in the morning with a reception in the Parish Hall.
Contributions made in Andy's name to Upward Hope Academy (upwardhopeacademy.com), Segera Mission (www.segeramission.org) or organizations that work to improve the lives of young people, a practice Andy engaged in throughout his life, are gratefully appreciated.

I am so thankful I had the privilege of meeting Andy when I attended a small group in his home while I was visiting my sister last year. He and his sweet wife were so kind. I spent a good amount of time visiting with Andy about his time on the swife boats during the VietNam war. I read one of his books and loved it. I saw him again ot church when I was in Galveston a few months later visiting my sister again. I really enjoyed knowing him, and was so sad when he passed away. I will visit Sylvia each time I go to see my sister, she is such a dear person.

One of the most true American Patriots I have known. One of my friends who truly enjoyed the hog hunt he made with me at Rolke Ranch.. Donna and I will forever be in gratitude for his friendship and kindnesses to our family. May the Good Lord Continue to Bless His Family and friends and the men he served our beloved country with! I am convinced we shall see our loved ones and friends again in Christ's Glorious Presence...until then fare thee well my friend!! Art and Donna Browning

There was never a more honorable prosecutor or more decent man. I know I opposed him several times way back when and never had a thought he was anything but reasonable, just a great guy.

From Lamar to feasts in Galveston, Andy always added his quiet joy to an occasion. He and Sylvia welcomed Sam and me to the table of friends. Forever grateful for the connection.
