Andrew Gilchrist Obituary

Andrew McCord Gilchrist
09/16/1967 - 04/21/2023
Andrew McCord Gilchrist, beloved father, husband, and friend, passed away on April 21st, 2023, after a strong battle with cancer.
Son of Ralph and Mary Ann Gilchrist, Andy was born on September 16th, 1967. Andy was what you might have called an "energetic" child. He was sent to school very promptly by his mother. Through his middle school days, Andy's conduct grades were average, and his favorite school subjects were P.E. and Lunch. Andy loved all sports, but from a young age he identified most with basketball. He started his iconic basketball career on "The Little Dribblers."
At Memorial High School, Andy believed people envied him most for his mad basketball skills and his El Camino. He received numerous basketball awards, including Texas All State First Team 1984 & 1985, All Star 1984 (MVP) & 1985, and All Greater Houston 1984 (MVP) & 1985. He then followed his dream of playing D1 basketball at Rice University, where he earned a basketball scholarship and a four-year starting spot on the team. Andy often boasted that he held the Southwest Conference records for Most Fouls and Fewest Assists. He led his team in scoring his senior year, and was voted senior captain by his teammates because they loved and respected him. Upon graduation, he received the Rice Basketball Most Valuable Player award.
In his college years, Andy made incredible memories and life-long friends. He graduated from Rice with a degree in Economics and Managerial Studies. During this time, he met a cute Duke girl named Laura Van Os. He continued his career at Southern Methodist University Law School, where he perhaps had even more fun than he did in college. He graduated from SMU in 1993. Andy married his lovely bride, Laura, in 1994, and set his roots down in Houston.
Andy was a superstar on the court and in the courthouse. He worked at local litigation boutique firms, and earned his Board Certification in Personal Injury Trial Law. In 2000, he started as Counsel in the Torts Litigation section of ExxonMobil. He loyally spent the next 22 years of his life at Exxon, and served most recently as General Counsel of ExxonMobil Risk Management, Inc. He would be the first to say that the people he met during his tenure at ExxonMobil were not just colleagues, but dear, life-long friends and mentors. Aside from his professional life, Andy belonged to many communities, including St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, Houston Country Club, Boot Ranch Golf Club, and Garwood Lease.
Andy led an unbelievably vibrant life. He was a big man who lived large in the small moments. He just made life more fun. Andy loved fishing, hunting, and golfing- really any activity that involved cool gear, travel, and spending time with friends and family. He was a faithful man of Christ and a servant to his community. He was the life of the party and the star of the show. Andy Gilchrist was an Astros fan, a performer of schticks, lover of accessories, savant of style, friend to all, and the ultimate Girl Dad. He often said that his greatest accomplishments of all were his two daughters, Mackie and Ellie.
Andy is survived by his loving wife, Laura, and his two daughters, Mackie and Ellie. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Gayle and Charles Doraine, his brother, Jeff, as well as a brother and sister-in-law, Chip and Christina Van Os, and his mother-in-law, Nancy Van Os. Furthermore, he is survived by hundreds of amazing friends and family. Andy Gilchrist was well-loved, and this is a testament to his life.
A celebration of Andy's life will be held at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church on May 3rd at 3pm. His family would like to extend sincere thanks to the health care professionals at M.D. Anderson who provided excellent and compassionate care for Andy. They would also like to thank the group of men who prayed faithfully for Andy during his fight with cancer. Memorial gifts should be directed to Halo House which provides affordable housing for patients battling leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma without close proximity to home. During his illness, Andy felt blessed to be close to home with support of family and friends and recognized the critical housing needs of his fellow patients who had to travel to Houston for treatment. I'll never forget when you were about 3 years old, you gave some of your gum to everyone in the room except Aunt Libby. Your mom said "What about Aunt Libby?' You didn't have anymore, so you took the half chewed piece out of your mouth and offered it to her.....that's the kind of human being you were. You will be missed. Deepest sympathies to Laura, Ellie and Mackie

It was a pleasure knowing you and training you. So one day Andy ask me why he´s not losing weight. We work out hard every time and I´m not losing. Let me ask you this Andy what did you eat last night? He said we went to a Mexican restaurant I had a HANDFULL of chips and fajitas no tortillas. That´s good right? It was my honor to be Andy's Basketball Coach at Rice University. Andy was an exceptional leader as well as an extraordinary person. He was beloved by his teammates and the coaching staff and he left a legacy that impaced the program long after he graduated. I will always remember the evening when Andy led an inexperienced team of Rice Owls to victory over the Texas Longhorns at the Frank Erwin Center. Prayers and Blessings for the Gilchrist family.

I met Andy through our mutual lifelong friend, Glenn Youngkin. Although I was only around Andy maybe a dozen or so times (over a 35-year period, starting with the summer after college during a weekend visit to Glenn's and my hometown, Virginia Beach), I felt complete kinship with him and when I did see him, it was like we'd been daily friends our whole lives. I suspect there are many people who feel that same way. He was kind, funny, charming, energetic, full of good cheer always, and in his own enigmatic way "looking for trouble." What a great man to remember and what an unimaginable loss this must be for his family and friends who loved him.

With love and admiration,

Laura, Mackie & Ellie:

I never had the opportunity to meet you all, but wanted to share some thoughts about your husband/father Andy.

I was at least a year older and played on the 1984 Memorial HS basketball team with him, when we lost in the Texas 5A State Finals.

We were an extremely close knit team, probably why we made it to the final game, as we were far from the most athletic team that year.

Andy was a major force that year as a junior, and was so happy for him that he went on to play at Rice.

But much beyond basketball, Andy was such a nice guy and a great friend. We shared many laughs together on bus rides, all of the practices and off court outings.

I did not know about his battle with cancer, and hadn´t spoken to him in years. (I live in Indianapolis.)

But upon seeing the news on Facebook (thanks to fellow teammate Elvin Hayes), I was really shocked and saddened.

I know he was a great husband, dad, good friend, lawyer and overall person.

Though I didn´t speak to him often as stated, I really wanted you to know how much I enjoyed knowing Andy, and how highly I thought of him.

Sending all my love and prayers to your family. Know that his memories will always be with you as they are with me too.

All my best to your family.

Andy was my mentor at ExxonMobil and I have carried much of the advice he gave me throughout my career. More importantly, he continued to be a friend and I never left a lunch or telephone call with him without many laughs and a smile on my face. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Andy...A final letter to you commends you for the most important things that you mastered so well.

WORK ETHIC. At multiple times in our lives we lived real close to each other and would always cross paths. In 7th grade we hooped together and your size took over so fast. Your skills had to play a quick catch up and indeed they did through your committed work on the court. Later in life, we chatted about the law and the best gig [corporate side] relatively speaking. It is no wonder that your gracious personality and competitive work landed you anything you wanted work wise.

HUMOR. You were always open to taking or giving a joke. As goal driven as you were, there was always time for a laugh.

COMMITMENT TO FAMILY. I recall in college you paying tribute to your dad when the oil/gas industry was on the rocks [even though u got well deserved full ride to Rice :)]. Later in life, before you hopped to Exxon, I recall you saying far too many law firms expected continual weekend work which naturally was contra family life. It was never about you - instead it was about the others you were closest to.

COURAGE. It takes courage to compete in anything....even if you are out of your comfort zone. You buckled down always in sports, Rice studies or lawyering. Most recently, when I saw you at the courthouse after battling the chemo, you seemed to take it all in stride. Even if one dose of therapy was not sticking, you kept your chin and outlook up when many would have crumbled.

HUMILITY. You epitomized the phrase of Gentle Giant. From middle school you towered over everyone physically. Contrast that with your quiet unassuming nature, it was always a pleasure to see you. When we lived near each other in West U close to ur college alma mater, so many folks seemed to know you around the Village. Indeed, you never wanted to become a washed up jock and your better senses/humility opened up so many other doors for you.
Now the door to after life has opened for you and we have lost a Winner but the heavens have gained a class guy on all fronts.
RIP ANDY and God Bless your wife and daughters..

Andy -a true champion on and off the court-a leader- a Christian brother who delighted in your joy and stood beside you in your defeat (and made you laugh until your face hurt -regardless of circumstances.
He could make a flat tire the highlight of your day. I believe he had far more "assists" than he knew.
So blessed to have grown up with him in church and in the MHS gym. Love and prayers to his beautiful family.
We will always remember Andy.

My mother, Betty Thomas was friends with Andy´s mother for over 70 years having roomed together at Baylor University. I can remember many trips to Houston to visit his family and, of course they would stay with us in Dallas. His family was my family and we considered them cousins.
I can only imagine how missed he will be by Laura, his daughters and siblings.
Rest in peace Andy,
Maggie Thomas Brown

The devastating news of Andy's promotion to Heaven has rocked our classmates world. He was so universally loved and we have all been reminiscing how he loved to joke around and his funny obsession with the El Camino. We send our condolences and invite you to our MHS 85 FB page to read the touching notes people have written about Andy. He was truly one in a million and we are so sorry for your loss. Peace be with you. Another angel gets their wings.

What a tremendous person and such a loss for the whole community. Andy was a very talented basketball players and always the person teams had to stop to beat Rice.
May his memory be eternal!

Andy was the best of the best; a faithful model of Christian service, grace, and love! He was and lived the high standard of excellent as husband, father, friend, legal and business associate, gentleman in convivial play or fierce competition, a virtuous, bold man of God. We will miss him until we are together again.

We are so sorry and sad for this terrible loss. Andy was taken far too soon, but leaves behind a tremendous legacy of life and faith and service. I remember when he got his new truck for his 40th birthday and was so joyful and generous about sharing it with everyone - including transporting my new fancy bean bag chair to my then single lady house. His smiles and good humor were infectious, and he just exuded cheer and hospitality all the time. We mourn with Laura, Mackie, Ellie, and all of the beloved Gilchrists´ family and friends.
