Anna Steinberger Obituary

Anna Steinberger
01/01/1928 - 12/28/2023
Anna Steinberger, aged 96, of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023. Born on January 1, 1928, in Radom, Poland, she was the beloved daughter of Sara and Isaac Schneider. She was a devoted wife to her late husband Emil Steinberger, and together they shared a lifetime of love, professional achievement, travel, and cherished memories.
Anna was a woman of remarkable character, known for her wisdom, practicality and strength. Her independent spirit guided her through very harsh and challenging years during WWII, emigration to the US, then a fulfilling career in medical research. From 1961 to 1971, she was dedicated to her research at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Following this, she became a respected professor and researcher at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, where she was a member of the founding faculty. In 2002, Anna's passion for education and remembrance led her to the Holocaust Museum Houston, where she served as a docent, board member, and lecturer. Her commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and promoting tolerance had a profound impact on all who had the privilege of hearing her speak, particularly the school children, who were her favorite audience.
Beyond her professional life, Anna found joy in skiing, sailing, and traveling. Her adventurous spirit and zest for life were an inspiration to those around her. Anna's love extended to her family, and she cherished the time spent with her daughters, Pauline Solnik, and Inette Brown (Joshua), her grandson Mathew, her sister-in-law Stella, her nephews Paul (Francine), Glen (Nora), and Jim (Anne), her nieces Mimi (Craig), Kathy (Joe), and Audrey (Rob)as well as her cousins Gil (Dierdre), Leopold, Paul (Linda) and Betty. She was preceded in death by her husband and soulmate Emil, her sole sibling, brother Jacob, and her beloved nephew Brian.
A funeral service honoring Anna's life will be held at Emanu El Memorial Park (8341 Bissonnet) on January 3rd at 10:00 AM. In her memory contributions may be made to the Holocaust Museum Houston or the Drs. Emil and Anna Steinberger Endowed Research Award in Reproductive Medicine at the Texas Medical School Houston.
Anna Steinberger's presence will be deeply missed but her legacy of intelligence, kindness, and perseverance will forever be treasured. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.

I only knew Anna through professional association as a scientist. She was a leader in her field, a determined advocate for increased female participation in science and medicine, and a warm heart where so much is said to be cold. The world is better off for her having been in it leaving many to wish her peace and eternal rest.

Anna was my mentor when I trained as a docent at the Holocaust Museum, Houston. She was an interesting... remarkable woman. May her memory be eternal.
