Beatrice Lopez Obituary

Beatrice Terry
Lopez passed away in her home in Jackson Heights, New York on Tuesday, May 15 after a year-long courageous battle with cancer. She died peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
Terry is survived by her partner, Gretchen McKay Michelfeld and their three year old son, Beckett Theodore Austin Lopez. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Francisco and Amalia Lopez of Tampa, Florida and Buster and Ruth Reid of Madisonville, Texas. She is survived by her parents Ramon and Brunelda Reid Lopez, sister Lisa Lopez Bonassin and her husband Albert, sister Nancy Lopez, sister-in-law Lisa Wannemacher, nephews Joshua Stevenson and Max Stevenson, and niece Blake Stevenson Hamilton and her husband Joshua Hamilton, all of Houston.
Terry was born in Pasadena, Texas on May 25, 1960. During her childhood and youth she lived in many different parts of the country as the family was transferred during the early years of her father's career. The family returned to Houston in 1974 and Terry graduated from high school in Houston. She received a Bachelors Degree in Theatre Arts from Trinity University in San Antonio in 1982, and a Masters in Fine Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College in 1998. She lived in Walnut Creek, California for about fourteen years where she taught at the White Pony Montessori School. Terry loved children and wrote a number of plays and musicals for them. She touched the lives and minds of many
young people and inspired them to follow their dreams.
Terry had been involved with the theater in New York for many years, and was Associate Director on several Broadway shows including Spring Awakening, Memphis, La Bete, God of Carnage and most recently Leap of Faith. She was the recipient of the 2005-2007 fellowship presented by the National Endowment for the Arts/Theatre Communications Group Career Development Program for Directors and a Drama League Fellowship. Terry was a devoted and loving mother and wife, a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, sister-inlaw, and much loved by her extended family and her many friends in California and New York where she lived most of her adult life. She leaves a void in her family that will never be filled.
A service to celebrate her life was held in the 3LD Arts and Technology Center in New York City on Saturday, May 19. In Houston, a service to celebrate her life will be held at

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Bea as a young student , then teacher, then as my director. She was a brilliant beauty in every phase of life--and was a light unto every life she touched.
