After graduating from Riley High School and turning down a free ride with a scholarship to Harvard University, Bert decided to attend his father's alma matter, DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. While attending DePauw, Bert joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, graduating in 1960 with a major in History and a minor in Chemistry. Bert then completed multiple semesters of graduate level classes in Zoology before joining the United States Navy. Bert entered active Naval Service in 1962 upon graduation from Officers Candidate School. Bert's first tour was onboard the USS EVERETT F. LARSON (DD 830) where he served as Electronics Material Officer, Navigator and OOD (F). From 1962 - 66, the LARSON completed two extended WESTPAC tours including MARKET TIME operations. He has also been involved with MSC Atlantic in implementing lessons learned during Operation Desert Storm, developing joint service training and projects, working to improve training efficiency and effectiveness. In September 1991, Captain Anson was recalled to active service as Commanding Officer of the Military Sealift Command Office in Houston during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Military awards during service (1962 - 1992) - Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Armed Force Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
After retiring from the US NAVY in 1992, Bert threw himself into his property development and management company that operated in the Montrose and Midtown areas of Houston. During his spare time, Bert also taught Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology at HCC for about ten years. He spent most of his free time either with his family, working, or doing his civic duty.
