Carl Mitten Obituary
1932-2017
Dr. Carl Vernon Mitten went to be with the Lord on April 7, 2017. He courageously battled cancer while surrounded by many loved ones and family members. Dr. Mitten was born on Sept. 18, 1932 in La Plata, Mo. He attended Truman State University, graduating in 1954. After college, he served our country in the U.S. Army Korean War conflict for two years, stationed in Japan. He graduated from Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1960. He then completed his surgical residency in Tulsa, OK. He practiced medicine in the Northshore area of Houston for more than 50 years. He felt it was a privilege to practice medicine. He enjoyed traveling with family and racing thoroughbred horses. "Enjoy Every Day" - Carl Mitten.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Artie and Mabel Mitten; sisters, Alta Stott and Leta Mae Stinnett; niece, Barbara Wadel; nephew, Gary Motschall. Survivors: Wife of 62 years, Lois Mitten; daughters, Katherine Steinbrenner (John), Marva Wood (Darrell), and Laura Mitten; grandchildren, Daniel and Michael Steinbrenner, Whitney and Sydney Wood; sister- in- law, Pat Motschall and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers any donations be made to "Carl V. Mitten, D.O. Scholarship Fund" at Truman State University, 100 E. Normal Ave., Kirksville, Missouri 63501.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Dr. Mitten on Saturday, April 22nd from 2pm - 5pm at Armenta's Reception Hall 825 Sheldon Road, Channelview, Texas. If you need more information contact [email protected].

Dr Carl V Mitten my only Dr for 34 years as of today April 5 2020 I've never found a Dr like him...I really miss him for my health reasons like when I get sick no other Dr gives me the right RX like Dr Mitten always gave me the exact medication i needed to get well...I really miss you Dr Mitten wish you were still here from the bottom of my heart I wish you peace and happiness in heaven R.I.P..Ipray when I go to heaven i will see you again one day...love you Dr Mitten

I'm so saddened to hear doctor mittens passing away he was a wonderful doctor he was my family doctor.he delivered all three of my children and he delivered all five of my mother's children he was a wonderful person and a great doctor. He's the only doctor ever in my life that I was comfortable with there will never be another doctor like him.. you will surely be missed.

I was so saddened to discover that Dr Mitten has passed.
My father Dr. Victor H. Zima D.O. and Dr. Mitten were dear friends from the beginning of his surgical career in Texas.
My father loved him very much and enjoyed having him in surgery with him for many, many years. I understand that they were quite the pair always telling jokes!! They loved enjoying Grey Goose Vodka from time to time.
Dr. Mitten was a great physician. My father admired him in so many ways.
I remember that my Daddy delivered one of his children.
Yes Dr. Mitten loved race horses. My Daddy was so honored and happy that he would be so kind as to name one of his horses Doc-zi-Do. I think that is how he spelled it.
May he rest in peace. I hope he and my Daddy are telling jokes in Heaven together!!

Dr. Mitten was my next door neighbor in North Shore for four years in the early 1980s. He was a wonderful neighbor, always with a big smile. I am sure he was a great doctor but he was a fabulous human being. The world is less without him.

Dr. Mitten and my dad, Dr. Robert Ling, were friends for a long time. Dr. Mitten always the life of the party, made you feel welcome. I grew up knowing Dr Mitten and his family. After I grew up and moved away, moved back to the northshore area and my husband, daughter and myself were dr.mittens patients again, like going home. When you became Dr. Mittens patient, you were family. R.I.P Dr.Mitten and thanks for taking care of us. I remember one time after I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and my daughter was 3, Mrs. Mitten came over to our house and brought food. So much kindness. We were so blessed to have him and his family in our life.

Dr. Mitten was a wonderful doctor and honorable person. He was so precious and dear to me. I loved him. He cared for me and my children like we were family. He treated me with respect and tender care. We I was struggling financially he helped me with medication for myself and my babies. He was a kind human being. He will have a special place in Heaven. Dr. Mitten embraced life in everything he touched. During my younger years he cared for me during the hardest heartbreak of my life. He told me that life is to be enjoyed each day and let no one take that from me. I will forever remember his kindness and genuine love for his patients. His smile and sense of humor was like no other! May the family find peace during this time. Thank you to the family for sharing your husband, father and loved one with all of us that dearly loved him. He truly made a difference in people! RIP Dr. Mitten..forever remembered!

Dr. Mitten took care of everyone in my family at some point. The best thing he ever did was treat my mom for her diabetes at no cost when she was uninsured for several months. He truly cared about his patients, we all love him!

My memories are endless. I met Dr. Mitten when I started to work for Dr. Ward in 1967. He delivered my 3 children; 2 of my grandchildren and performed my major surgeries. I walked the halls of Eastway waiting for his patient to deliver; often he would say "come on in, let's have a baby". My last witnessed delivery with him was at Tidelands as he delivered my 1st grandchild. His knowledge was overwhelming; he was full of stories; his bedside manner was beyond perfect. I knew all about Ms. Lois' paintings; he offered swimming lessons to my daughter when Kathy was teaching and of course the horse stories. Dr.Mitten cared about his patients, my daughter had an unknown problem with her leg, he found a doctor and recommended me to him and made a call in his office that day and told him I want you to treat her as if she was my daughter. Dr mitten was a wonderful dr and family friend. He delivered several children in our family . Our family are the Crawford 's from jacinto city. We knew him for many years. When every single memory you have of a person reminds you of his immense kindness, isn't that an AMAZING thing? And when your very Last memory of him is just as unselfish as the seemingly 5000 ones that came before, that signals a truly remarkable person! Such is the tribute my family and I must pay to Dr. Carl Mitten. Somewhere in between his 50+ years of practice, he delivered my three daughters, who as they grew up and grew away, came to love him as much as I did. His caring generosity and unfaltering commitment to his patients was so evident in his daily practice, that each of us knew that we were personally cared for - we felt we were always at the top of his list. How did he manage that, making so many people feel so important? His caring and his candor were infectious; he passed it on to his staff - and his wife, Lois, and his daughters who also knew many of his patients. Dr. Mitten was a brilliant, accomplished physician and the medical community has lost one its shining stars. The North Shore community has lost one of its role models and fine mentors. My family and I have lost our doctor and dear friend and we will deeply grieve his passing. ❤ God Bless and God Speed to Lois, the girls, and the entire Mitten family. May your hearts be comforted. He delivered my first son. I will never forget him. He was so kind and nonjudgmental.It was a scary time in my life and he always knew the right words to say. What a great loss to the medical field also as a warm, compassionate being.

Uncle Carl was such a kind,generous man. Always looking at ways to make sure everyone was happy and entertained during our visits.He was quite the story teller with such an amazing memory.
