This holy priest was LEGENDARY. He was faithful to the promises of his ordination to the last day, in an era when most of his brother priests apostasized. He brought the faith and the Mass to Catholics even in far off Australia, where he would officiate at the nuptials of Hutton Gibson's daughter and meet her brother, Mel, who was dabbling with acting at the time. His work all over the USA and especially Florida made him unforgettable to so many struggling Catholics. His scarred face and valiant efforts in defense of the Faith are immortalized in the character "Father Guttmacher" in Malachi Martin's portrait of the Catholic Church in the latter 20th Century, "Windswept House." His was the first Latin Mass in Florida that I stumbled upon in 1990 when I had all but given up on the possibility of receiving Catholic sacraments. I will remember him in my prayers every day for the rest of my life.

Father Carl used the computer often, so it seems fitting to write a tribute to him on it. Dear Father Carl will be missed by all that knew him, but especially by those of us here in Florida. At one time he serviced the four chapels here and made the long trip from Davie, to Lake Worth to Vero Beach and then across the coast to Fort Meyers every Sunday. He drove himself with no driver to assist him and never complained about the distance or the wear and tear such a trip took on him. He knew that there were souls that needed the Mass and the sacraments and Father Carl was determined to bring them to all of us. He never lost sight of what his vocation and lifes work was, the salvation of souls. We here in Florida, like so many others whose lives he touched are forever grateful to him for his pastoral care, concern and selfless dedication to the souls in his care. With his passing an era ends for there are very few priests if any left that will go the distance like Father Carl did to administer to souls every week. He fought the fight, he kept the faith and now he is resting in the arms of Our Lord and Our Lady and we're sure Our Lord has already said to him, "this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased". God Bless you, Father Carl we love you and miss you.
