Carmel Bitondo Dyer
Carmel Bitondo Dyer passed away on May 4, 2021. She was born in New Jersey to first generation Italian-Americans. Her parents provided excellent parochial school education for her in elementary and high school. They worked hard to support her through college at Stetson University and Physician Assistant School at Baylor College of Medicine. During college she worked as a nursing assistant in long term care facility where she became enamored with the care of older adults.
She was accepted into medical school at Baylor in 1988 and went on to complete Internal Medicine residency and Geriatric Medicine Fellowship also at Baylor. She joined Baylor's faculty and established the Geriatric Program at Ben Taub Hospital. While at Baylor she also established The Elder Abuse and Mistreatment Institute which continues to serve vulnerable older adults across the state of Texas.
In 2007 she was recruited to UTHealth where she established geriatric and palliative programs at Memorial Hermann Hospital, LBJ Hospital and UT Physicians. She served as Chief of Staff at LBJ Hospital well as Executive Vice-chair of Internal Medicine. She loved all her roles as doctor, educator, researcher and administrator. She was passionately devoted to underserved and vulnerable older adults throughout her career.
Carmel is predeceased by her parents Carmela and Salvatore Bitondo. She is survived by her loving siblings Jerene Bitondo, Donna Ahern and Salvatore Bitondo, as well as dear nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her devoted husband James Kimbrough Dyer; his conversion to the Catholic faith was one of her most memorable life events.
Carmel was grateful to her dear friends and colleagues. She was extremely appreciative for the extensive support of Dr. Giuseppe Colasurdo and Dr. David McPherson. The family acknowledges the excellent medical care she received particularly by Dr. Andreea Xavier, Dr. Eduardo Bruera, Dr. Jeffrey Lee and Crossroads Hospice.
