Charles was a wonderful musician and great recanteur. His sense of humor was huge, bawdy, and it was always present. It was always a treat to play chamber music with him

Charles was the assistant conductor to my father, Walter Herbert, at Houston Grand Opera. So, as a child, I saw him train the chorus, conduct on occasion and always render kind and charming words and deeds. My father, who had been instrumental in bringing Charles to Houston, thought he was very musical (a rare compliment) and respected his work, while probably being a tough taskmaster.

Toward the end of my mother's life he called her, despite her prickly behaviour. Another act of kindness. She and I had also heard him in Brevard many years ago.

The Charles I recall was kind, thoughtful and gracious. Incredibly musical and insightful. With the longest arms extending over the orchestra that this child had ever seen.

He is forever woven into the tapestry of my HGO memories. And my heart.

I was purchasing tickets this week for Carmen with Renee Fleming this fall and memories flooded over me of the Opera Carolina's production many years ago and decided to see what Charles had been doing. I was a chorus member for many years when I lived in Charlotte and Charles was the conductor for Opera Carolina. He was a dear friend, witty, smart, loving and nothing could have shocked me more than reading of his death today. I hope that he is ar peace.

What an amazing man. A musical genius and a warm, witty, charming man whom I was priviledged to know since 1978.

I shall miss you, dear Charles, and shall remember you with such fondness and affection and the Yoakum house and the Bouviers (sp?) and the endless hours completely immersed in your telling of the incredible stories of your incredible life.

What an inspiration.

Yours,

Paul and I are devastated by the news of Charles' passing. He was a cherished friend - a friendship that began in 1969 when I joined the Charlotte Opera (now opera Carolina)chorus. We can take some consolation in the belief that Charles is making beautiful music in a better place and regaling everyone with his incomparable stories. Such a loss.. he will truly be missed. Our hearts and sympathy go out to Jon, the Rosekrans family and all of his friends. We love you, Charles.

Charles was a kind and wonderful man. I played trumpet for him with HGO and Houston Ballet. His success with the Houston Chamber Orchestra inspired us to form the Texas Chamber Orchestra years later. I visited him once and he had two huge exotic dogs. A grand fellow who will be missed.

I can trace my lifelong love affair with opera directly to an HGO high school matinee performance of Barber of Seville conducted by Maestro Rosekrans. His legacy is the love of music he instilled in his audiences.

Charles was my godfather. My mother, Betty Lou Minar, chose Charles for this auspicious role not for his religious and moral guidance, but for the artistic inspiration he could provide. And, provide he did! I hold dear the memories of operas, ballets, musicals and concerts I attended in one of the front rows watching him conduct and waiting anxiously for the moment he would invite me, a young girl, backstage to meet the artists. Today, I am the director for a large local arts agency and I am sure that his influence was a major factor in my career and avocation choices. I will miss him.

Charles, in 1983, held my first child and marveled. He said it was the smallest "thing" he'd ever held. I remember the dinners at Valentino's when he was in Charlotte. He would start the food fight and my children got in trouble, kinda. Charles was the kindest, gentlest man I ever met. I am proud to have known him. RIP Charles
