Chris Reed Obituary

Charles Christopher "Chris" Reed
1968-2019
Charles Christopher "Chris" Reed, age 50, passed away on June 7, 2019. He was born in Princeton, Indiana to Charles Reed and Lu Ann (Smith) Clark on October 6, 1968.
His heart belonged to his family. Chris and his wife, Jana, were married on July 30, 1990. The couple's pride shines brightest for their three amazing children Logan, Chase and Alexis. Over the decades together, they shared a passion for education and improving the quality of life for kids throughout Bay Area Houston.
Chris is survived by his wife and children; his father Charles Reed and his wife Melinda; his mother Lu Ann (Smith) Clark and her husband Malcolm, as well as by a large family of brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Mary Reed and William Van Smith and Joyce Maier. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor and exuberant spirit.
Chris dedicated his life to service. His service to his country and community began in the U.S. Army where he was a graduate of the Military Police Academy and was certified as a military policeman. Promoting to the rank of sergeant, Chris was a paratrooper before his honorable discharge in 1990.
In 1991 he joined the League City Police Department, serving in numerous investigative and training capacities. Chris held the roles of assistant chief and, later, city administrator. During his time in League City, he graduated from the FBI National Academy Command College, received a Bachelor of Business Administration from LeTourneau University, and earned his Master of Science in criminal justice administration from Sam Houston State University.
In 2009 he was appointed city manager of Nassau Bay where he served for six years. Chris then began his own consulting agency, but his love of public service drew him to the City of Kemah where he took on the responsibility of police chief.
Being a civil servant and dedicated leader were just one part of his busy life. Chris also passionately supported his community, serving on dozens of boards and committees, many in support of Clear Creek Independent School District. In 2016 he successfully won a seat on the CCISD Board of Trustees, where he was recently named Secretary.
Chris held numerous leadership roles in child-focused philanthropic organizations for nearly two decades. Some of the organizations that benefited from his participation and guidance include the Clear Creek Education Foundation, Communities in Schools, Bay Area Alliance for Youth and Families, Hope Village, Lion's Club and several CCISD campus improvement councils and school naming committees.
For years, Chris could also be found on the wrestling mat. As a mixed martial arts fighter, he was known to many as the Celtic Tiger. He lent this expertise to area youth, when he founded the Houston Area Wrestling Foundation. The organization provides opportunities to lower socio-economic wrestlers, helping them improve self-confidence, discipline and good sportsmanship.
With such commitment to community, Chris was recognized through various awards, including the Melvin Jones Fellowship for his humanitarian work. He was selected by the Shepperd Leadership Institute of the University of Texas-Permian Basin as Texas' 2012 Outstanding Local Leader and was a finalist for the University of Houston Public Official of the Year in 2015.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at Clear Creek Community Church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019. The address is 999 FM 270, League City, TX 77573.
His family would be delighted if donations, in lieu of flowers, were made to any one of the following organizations: Texas EquuSearch at www.texasequusearch.org, Communities in Schools at www.cisba.org or the Concussion Legacy Foundation at www.concussionfoundation.org.

Chris was a treasure to earth and I am certain he is a treasure in heaven. He walked through life with strength, integrity, love and kindness in his heart, and was a role model to his family, his friends, and all who knew him. Very few people can be called a legendary but Chris is legendary. Remember death is an illusion. I truly have proof (a message from my great grandfather to my boyfriend that stunned my family), but that story is too long for this post. Chris is here right next to all of you watching over you and making sure you are cared for. All love beautiful souls!

I remember there were 4 of us deep in the jungle, we must have been walking the stretch from Devil's beach to Shimmy beach. Anyway we had stayed way too late and and we were under heavy canopy so there was no moonlight overhead, just blackness.

We had just reached a turn on the path where about half a mile down a straight stretch you could see moonlight on the ocean. I have to be honest, I was starting to crush on him.....which as everyone knows was easy to do. But right then we heard a panther growl and not just any panther and not just any growl. I am talking a bone shaking roar that caused reverberations in my body. Now we had heard stories of a panther purported to be 9 feet in length in this area so in an instant we all went in survival mode.

Now I have talked to law enforcement about the tunnel vision people experience in times of terror but for me its opposite. I become acutely aware of everything and time slows. So the instant we heard this, I was I midair flight when Chris Reed jumped on Greg's back and screamed run!!!! All I remember seeing is Greg did it and for a brief second in my mind even in a moment of sheer terror, I was like what the freak????? Wahahaha!!!!! He had me laughing even though it could have been our last moment. Now I dont know if Chris stayed on Greg's back the whole time as they emerged from the jungle after me, which makes me think......yeah I think he did. Haha! Anyhoo I realized also that maybe he wasn't the man for me. Lol!!!!! That was one of the funniest days ever and I am forever grateful for having Chris as a friend. All love to those who knew him!

Chris and I were teammates on the Houston Gunners Football team. One of my favorite teammates. Living in League City for many years, was impressed by the constant accomplishments in Chris' professional career, but worried about him doing the fighting. Will miss him.

I met Chris last year for lunch for the first and only time. Had a couple of follow up emails with him. He did as he promised to me that day he tried to assist me. I was heart felt struck when I heard what had happened and even though I new him only for short time I felt like I had know him a very long time.

I live by the understanding the a man's true wealth is in his family and how he walks thru life. This with out a doubt was one of the rich's men I have ever crossed paths with !!!

God Bless the Reed family.

I first met Chris when we were in the Police Academy together in Alvin, TX; where he was the Class President and I was the Red Team Leader. Years later our paths crossed once more when he was the Asst. Police Chief in League City and I was assisting a co-worker with trying to join the department. A true loss for many and much prayer to his family & friends during this trying time. ~ Gavin Giere

First my condolences to Chris's family and friends, my heart is breaking for you all. He and I were friends in Panama in our teens so i hope you enjoy the old picture. I must say from reading the many news stories that my take away from my old friend is that he was a leader. I have always told my son that when choosing leader, you choose people based on their character and their integrity (their actions in life not words). It seems he grew to be that type of man. So I want to thank his parents for creating a man of strength and to his wife and children for his evolution into the man he became. May God wrap you all in his loving arms until you meet again. I'm going to drink my first Schlitz in 30 years and most likely my last! Haha! Cheers old friend!

We are so very saddened by the loss of Chris! Prayers to his family & friends! Because of Chris' help we have a beautiful dog park in Nassau Bay! Without Chris' help, I personally would never had made such good friends and my dogs made lifelong friends as well. Chris came to my aide in Kemah as I was leaving Saltgrass where they too (officers) were eating, when I backed over a glass bottle, he checked my town car all over and made sure it was safe! We are also a LEO family, this hits home. Love, hugs, prayers and doggie kisses from the Bailey Family & very grateful Bailey Dogs; Sheriff Rusty Bob Bailey & Rookie Fiona Lynn Bailey.
