Clifford Johnson Obituary

Clifford Hastings Johnson
02/26/2025
Clifford Hastings "Hasty" Johnson, 76, of Houston and Aspen, lost his life in a skiing accident in Colorado on February 26. He died doing something he loved in a place he loved. As a devoted husband and father, he shared myriad adventures with loved ones, scaling jagged peaks in the Rockies with one daughter, galloping on horseback at midnight with the other, and hiking and biking miles upon miles with his wife and partner.

When he met real estate developer Gerald D. Hines, Hasty found a kindred spirit. He joined Hines in 1978 and spent forty-five years at the firm, retiring as Vice Chairman in 2023. He initiated the firm's acquisition program and developed the firm's investment management business, serving on the company's Executive and Investment Committees.

Hasty believed it was better to remain silent than to say nothing. While some found his quiet unnerving, they soon discovered his remarkable ability to listen and that the insights, empathy, and wit were worth the wait. When he spoke, he expressed himself with a candor that reflected the integrity of his character. He inspired trust.

While shouldering great responsibilities, he always made time for recreation, hiking, skiing, rock climbing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, biking, fishing, and bird hunting. Traveling and reading were passions. Often choosing challenging and improbable paths, Hasty would provide levity in the face of snow, sleet, mud, and misdirection while his constant companion, Sis, manned the map. In his adventurous life, he climbed the Matterhorn, explored remote regions of Africa, dived the coral reefs in the South Pacific as well as Little Cayman, and fished the jetties of Matagorda Bay.

He was born in Columbus, Georgia, and named after his father and grandfather. He attended Woodberry Forest School and Georgia Tech, where he graduated with a BS in Industrial Engineering. He then served in the Navy as a supply officer on the Mediterranean front and earned his MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1975.

He is survived by his dedicated wife of forty-six years, Edith H. "Sis" Johnson; his daughters, Alice Hastings Johnson and Ann Morrow Johnson; her husband, Francisco Rivera; and his siblings, Gwynn Polidoro, Lloyd Johnston, and Joel Johnson.

This quiet man will speak volumes to all who knew and loved him for the rest of our lives, as we attempt to model his competence, humility and adventurous spirit.

The family will hold a memorial service in Houston in the coming weeks to celebrate the life of this beloved remarkable man.

My heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family. I had the privilege of meeting Hasty through the Eldorado Ballroom project, where I served as the Senior Superintendent for the GC. Over time, I not only worked alongside him but also became his friend.

Hasty was a true pleasure to work with-always reasonable, respectful, and knowledgeable. He generously shared his understanding whenever asked, and while he was a quiet presence, his words carried sharp insight and weight, no matter the subject.

I deeply valued the times we walked the project together and had the chance to visit. Those conversations were both enriching and enlightening, adding a new dynamic and depth to my perspective in this industry. I will continue to carry and apply the lessons from our time together.

May God bless and keep his family during this time.

I had left a message at Hines asking for an email address for Sis but never heard back. I spent 16 years at Hines and loved working with Hasty on projects. His approach was always gentle. I also shared a special connection with Sis and the girls as fellow horse owners. I remember how much Ann loved to ride. Working with Hasty was always a pleasure. My sympathies to Sis and the family.

A light has been extinguished. Always friendly and had many conversations back when they built their house on our little piece of heaven. I remember his daughter Ann and Hastings walking the shoreline that we love back when she was very young. I am so sorry to hear of your passing, you lived life to the fullest. My sincere condolences to Sis, Ann and Alice.

I had the privilege of knowing Hasty for 14 years when he and Sis first welcomed me into their family and close circle of friends for their annual Aspen ski weekend. Hasty's obituary captures his many remarkable qualities, qualities we should all aspire to have. I am deeply grateful for having known him and will always remember him with great fondness.

I loved Hasty Johnson! He didn´t say much but when he did it funny as hell or you knew he knew what he was talking about. I have nothing but happy memories of Hasty.

I knew Hasty way back when, a Georgia Tech friend. My daughter is currently skiing in the Alps and her fiance and friends know Aspen well. Marie found a miniature toy skier figure and placed it under an enormous heart sculpture at Courchevel. The group said a prayer and I wanted the family to know that Hasty was remembered on the Alps today.

I truly feel blessed to have known and worked for Hasty Johnson at Hines in the 1990's. I reluctantly left Hines in 1998 to move to.Indonesia.
I was sad to hear of Hasty's death last week from my friend Deb Emory, but we shared good memories of him and those days on the 50th floor.
I have recently been going through old packing boxes fulll of travel mementos.
Just this afternoon, I spotted an envelope that looked new. I actually got chills when I saw that it was a note from Hasty thanking me for a book about Borneo i had sent him.
I like to think that he was giving me a little wave from the other side.

I was a classmate of Hasty´s at St. Elmo Elementary School in Columbus. We often sat near each other when seated in alphabetical order. I have fond memories of his quiet but friendly demeanor.

Most sincere condolences and respect, dear friend.
Thank you for the professional consideration and friendship you afforded me.
Rest in peace.

Our son in law is Hasty´s nephew, Peter Polidoro.
His mother Gwen is Hasty´s sister.
Barbara and I heard so many wonderful stories about Peter´s uncle that we almost felt that we knew him.
The term " Renaissance Man" is a term used too loosely, but Hasty´s life may well describe such a man.
Gwen described him as a person one could not help liking.
His personality was a magnet we were told.
Thus we, who did not even meet Hasty, also mourn his loss and send our deepest condolences to his family.
