David Gresser Obituary

David Alan Gresser
07/26/1953 - 03/30/2025
David Alan Gresser, age 71, passed away at his home in Houston, Texas, on March 30, 2025.
Born on July 26, 1953, in Manhattan, New York, David was the beloved son of Phyllis and Phillip Gresser. His early years were spent in England, Holland and on Long Island, but he also had the unique experience of attending high school in Singapore where his musical ability blossomed and he played the double bass in the Singapore Orchestra. Graduating from the American School in Singapore, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of the Pacific. He later earned master's degrees in both Economics and Music from the University of Houston.
David led a rich and varied professional life. He was a gifted musician and dedicated teacher, an entrepreneur who owned the Guitar Gallery in Houston, and a skilled software engineer. More recently, he embraced a new passion as an Airbnb "Superhost," welcoming guests into his home with warmth and hospitality.
Music was the heart of David's life. With his rare gift of perfect pitch, he excelled as a performer, teacher, and composer, inspiring in his students a deep love of music and the guitar. Beyond music, he had many interests, including reading, martial arts where earned a black belt in Karate, travel, studying Spanish, and cooking -- he took special pride in perfecting his father's bagel recipe, sharing it with family and close friends. His love for art was evident in his extensive collection of African and pre-Columbian pieces. A social and engaging person, David frequently hosted gatherings for his wide circle of friends, becoming a beloved fixture in his neighborhood of Cherryhurst in the Montrose area of Houston.
David is survived by his mother, Phyllis; his sister, Dianne, and her husband, Michael; and his Great Pyrenees, Hershey, his gentle giant.
David was a unique and talented individual, known for his great sense of humor and his determination to live life on his own terms. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

David was my best friend for many years, though after I moved to another city our communication gradually grew less easy and ultimately broke off from mutual misunderstandings. I regret not doing more to repair the relationship---I reached out last December and kept thinking I would follow up. Now I can't and knowing David has left us hurts my heart deeply. We all know what a good and generous person he was, and he taught me many things. I can only imagine how hard the loss must be for family and friends, and my sympathies to all who are missing him.

When I was a kid, both of my parents moved to different states and I lived with David from ages 11 to 18. David was a real life Jewish Angel.

David was more of a father to me than my father ever will be, and I am so grateful for him. David taught me to play guitar, he taught me kindness, he taught me humor.

There is so much I wish I could say to him, I did not tell him how much he meant to me and I will regret that forever. Thankyou David, for being a parent to me when my parents weren't able to, and for being my friend. Thankyou for everything you gave me and my family and my friend's families. You truly blessed my life. I love you forever, David.

I made music with David in high school. I couldn´t believe when he taught himself the sitar. Such a wonderful friend. Reading about him makes me even sadder that we lost touch after Singapore

David was a close friend for many years, in Houston. I got to hear his original songs, eat his "best ever" spaghetti sauce, and join his Un-Thanksgiving events. He told so many funny stories, with such humor and enthusiasm, and attracted a wide circle of friends. He was curious and creative and kind. Condolences to his family.

David was kind, smart, funny; a talented musician, a martial artist, a student of languages and a connoisseur of art and literature... and a good friend. I wish I had kept up our friendship. Lesson learned. I will not take those I love for granted.
Miss you, David.

David was a wonder. Kind, smart, funny... a talented musician, an art collector, a martial artist... and always a good friend. I wish I'd kept in closer touch. All I can do is try not make the same mistake, of taking it for granted that there is always time to catch up with those we love. I have just realized there isn't.
Miss you, David.

Acts of kindness and generosity are never forgotten. Many years ago, David allowed our band to rehearse after hours at the Guitar Gallery on Richmond. As I reflect, it´s these actions of graciousness for others to emulate. David, thank you for setting an example and to his family, our sincerest of blessings.

I´m so sorry for your loss. I am praying for you all. Please know that your loved one is safe in God´s memory (Proverbs 14:14,15). Just as he brought his son Jesus back to life, he will do the same for your loved one. May God give you comfort and strength to help you cope during this difficult time.
