Just thinking about Dwight and found a couple of pictures of Dwight back in the mid-1980s when he was pretty young (he must have been around 30 at the time). He and my father Bob Laws loved to play together and they were both very good with their guitars! Dad passed away 5 months before Dwight did, and I can only hope they're still jamming up a storm upstairs!

This was taken at my birthday party 2 years ago.

Dwight and I shared many of the same spiritual beliefs and had many delightful conversations on that topic. It is not common to find someone with whom you share such a kinship, especially on a uniquely spiritual level. We gave each other two great gifts--he wrote a song about me and I taught him about how perspective is everything. I will never forget the mark Dwight has made in my life, or the genuine and talented man that he was. There certainly is not a better art museum guide in all the land, and no one will ever play the guitar in the low, soulful, bluesy way that he could.

Dwight and I shared the stage many times, and shared a lot of thoughts too. He was a man of intelligence and integrity, and those qualities even outshone his special musical gift.

I'll cherish his memory always

Once in a lifetime that special person walks into your life. Lucky was my soul mate. We told each other everything----our inner feelings. He was truly my best friend. Lately I reach for my phone (sometimes we talked 10 times a day), let out a sigh, wipe away a tear and think of what he would have told me. I so miss him!!!!!
He loved helping at Special Olmpics events, we loved going to Galveston, the museums, art shows, Astro games, he even took me to see Peter Pan at the theatre. We were going to Superbowl when he got a new liver. But most of all things, he loved Chris.
He was always making me something, like picture frames or paintings.
He made me CDs to take on my road trips, telling me not to play until I was on the road----once playing, I was smiling. He would always play "There's No Sunshine when She's Gone" for me. Well my friend, the sun is not as bright for me without you. I feel blessed to have known Dwight, the musician, artist, father and friend. Love You.

Dwight was my brother and it's hard to express all that a brother means to you but as I expressed at Dwight's memorial service, he was my hero when I was young because he was so good at everything he did.
I couldn't ever beat him at a game of chess and I couldn't even beat him at basketball even though I grew to be taller than him. Dwight was one that loved to read he read through the whole encyclopedia just for something to read. His intelligence astounded me and it just came so easy to him.
As my cousin Bruse said, Dwight definitely did things his own way whether it was right or wrong he was going to do it his way.
He would get upset with me when I would tell people that he could play anything on that guitar that they wanted to hear because as we all know you have to learn a song first in order to play it, and I don't think he liked me putting that kind of pressure on him, but it was true though because he could play anything he set his mind too.

He even learned to play the piano/keyboard. He could play the bass guitar a little too.
But to me he was my brother that noone can replace and I loved him dearly and hope to see him in Heaven one day having all eternity to learn all the instruments that God allows him to play.
I miss you Man!!!

Dwight and I were the in-laws of the Kliebert clan; we didnt know quite what we had signed up for that is for sure!

He will be greatly missed by all family and friends alike. As for the 3 children he helped raise, Chris - his and Treste's (Mickey), and Jamie & Jeremy-Treste's, they will all miss him as he was always there for them. Just remember, guys, He will always be there with you, if not in body, he will be in soul, in memories, in the faces you see in the family you have and the people you love.

He is in a better place, no more suffering or pain. God bless you, Dwight, we will all miss you so.

I never got the chance to meet Dwight D. Petty in person but I have spent alot of time with his family and friends, mostly from the Manvel area. I know he was an amazing person from all the people he touched. I was blessed to meet his Daughter Jamie his family and friends. We are very simple folk and love music and the life style he represented. I was very blessed to come into contact with these people and thank Dwight every day for giving them to me. My only regret was that I never met him and partied with him. cause good folk is good folk and one day we will meet and he will tell me how proud he is of me for taking care of Jamie for Him!

Im Katie, Jeremys wife to be.I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Dwight that well but I did have the honor of hearing him play his music. That will be a lifetime memory. He made me feel welcome and like family. Dwight is one of those people you will never forget and will be missed dearly. I was looking forward to him being at our wedding but I know he will be there in his own way. Deepest sympathies to all that loved Dwight.

With all my love

I am Dwight's cousin from Atlanta. I am about 18 years older and spent at lot of time with him during his first 7 years. Zoos, movies, hikes, kids shows, etc. Even then he proved to be a gifted person. I saw him a little in the 60s when he was doing his thing with his guitar. Most recently only family tragedies brought us together.

I am very proud of Dwight because he lived life his way. We can all take a clue from this.

Thanks Dwight

Cousin Bruce

My thoughts and prayers go out to Dwight's family and dear friends in this time of sorrow. I am the wife to one of Dwight's nephews, Travis Kliebert. I did not know Dwight very long, nor did I have the chance to become very close with him as I only had the privilege of meeting him and visiting with him a few times in the beginning of my relationship with Travis. However, I feel like I know him very well and have a great deal of respect for him because of the 3 great kids he raised and the generous words and stories told about him. All of his family and friends speak highly of him and are all very proud of him. I can agree that he was, and I am sure still is, a very talented man. I did have the honor of hearing some of his beautiful music when visiting with him and again at his memorial. Dwight definitely had many friends and a great family here that will miss him dearly. However, being the generous and kind man that he was, I am positive that he is waiting on the other side, passing the time strumming his guitar, and patiently waiting until the time we all meet again. Until then, may God bless all those who were close with Dwight and guide them through this difficult time.

I have lots of memories of my Uncle Dwight throughout the years. I remember him being the "cool uncle who played the guitar", always showing up to family events and jamming while everyone gathered around to listen. I also remember going to his and my aunt’s house and all the garage band parties and good times. My uncle Dwight was a laid back, easy going and kind man that will be missed. His memories will be carried on forever in his music and the people he influenced throughout the years.

His family was truly blessed to have spent time and space with such a wonderful man...as well as anyone else who had the priviledge of knowing him.

I have known Dwight pretty much all my life. He and my dad, Bob Laws, had been friends ever since I could remember. Our families used to live on the same block; that's how they met. He heard someone playing a guitar down the street, and being a music lover too, my dad walked down to say "hello". As they say...the rest is history.

My dad also passed away last December from cancer. I recently found out from my brother that Dwight had been ill for quite some time now. It brings a tear to my eye to think that even though Dwight had his own problems going on, he still made time to go see my Dad in the hospital, and even played his guitar for him. This just shows how great of a man Dwight was...

He is forever etched into my memories.

My deepest sympathies to Mickey, Jaime, Jeremy, and the rest of the family.

God Bless You All!
