Edward Elmo Murray, Jr. passed away on January 24, 2021 in Spring, Texas at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Beverly Murray, brother Faburn Murray, and parents Agnes Moses and Edward Elmo Murray. He is survived by his daughter, Leslee Minahan and husband J. J., grandchildren Lauren Furr and husband Travis, and James Minahan and wife Olivia, 6 great grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as "Papa Mo" and sister-in-law Dalinda Murray.
Elmo was born on August 4, 1926 in Cuero, Texas. When the Depression came, the family moved to Bebe, where he started school in a 1 room schoolhouse that was a 1.5 mile horseback ride away. Living conditions were poor, but improved when the family relocated to Nixon in 1934. While there, he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized in the Nixon Baptist Church. In 1937, the family moved one final time to El Campo, where he graduated from El Campo High School in June 1942.
In 1943, he volunteered for the V-5 Naval Aviation Program, then later transferred to the V-12 Officer Training Program. He received his commission in 1946, and was released from active duty shortly thereafter. He remained in the Naval Reserves until 1959, when he was honorably discharged.
He attended Texas A&M in 1943-1944. He transferred to The University of Texas at Austin and graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and Naval Science and Tactics, and membership in Tau Beta Pi, an honorary engineering society. He held a lifetime membership in the Texas Exes Alumni Association and was an ardent fan of all UT sports.
In September 1948, he began a 43 plus year career with Humble Oil & Refining (Exxon Mobil). After one year of service, on September 13, 1949, he married his wife Beverly. He served in numerous engineering and managerial positions until retiring in February 1992. He was a registered Professional Engineer in Texas and Louisiana and a life member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He was also a lifetime member of the Texas Masonic Order.
He loved hunting and golfing and enjoyed golf as a member of Raveneaux Country Club during most of his retirement. He was also an avid bridge player and a fan of all sports.
Elmo was the true embodiment of faith, family, country, and friendship. He was grateful to the Lord for his successful life in spite of his humble beginnings. He loved his family dearly, and there was nothing he would not do for them. He served his country and did his civic duty as well, serving on numerous community boards and committees. He was a good friend to all who knew him and had a knack of always being able to find the right words to say to someone in their time of need. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be missed.
He loved his retirement community, The Village at Gleannloch Farms, and was living independently there until recently. He was an active participant in activities and outings and made many new friends that he cherished.
In honor of his wishes and in light of the pandemic, there will be no formal services at this time. For anyone desiring to make a tribute, please do so to your favorite charity.
