Edwin Hessel Obituary

Edwin Hessel
09/07/1928 - 08/02/2025
Edwin Ferdinand Hessel
September 7, 1928 – August 2, 2025

Edwin Hessel was a man of conviction, intellect, humor, and faith. Born in Queens, New York, he moved to Texas with his family at the age of three. He took special pride in his heritage. His father, Oscar Hessel, was a ship captain from Sweden who brought many through Ellis Island in search of a better life in America. His mother Hedwig, came to America on her own from Sweden also.

Edwin spent his childhood in the Park Place area of Houston with his sister May and brother William. He graduated early from Milby High School in 1945 and joined the U.S. Army. He later attended the University of Houston, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering and met the love of his life, Barbara Vann. Together, they cherished their college memories, especially working on events like Frontier Fiesta. They married and made their home in Houston's Meadow Creek neighborhood, raising three children and remaining active members of the Lutheran church.

Edwin worked proudly as an engineer for Monsanto and Phillips 66, a career he cherished until his retirement. But his interests extended far beyond engineering. He kept many friendships from his days at Milby and was a life member of the University of Houston Alumni Association. He obtained a real estate license, became an avid racquetball player and dedicated walker, often logging several miles a day well into his eighties, and developed a deep love for reading, following the stock market, and woodworking. His handcrafted pieces were treasured gifts, and anyone who received one knew they held a special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Vann Hessel; his parents, Oscar and Hedwig Hessel; his brother William Hessel; and his sister May Thompson.

He is survived by his children: David Hessel (and wife Lori Evans Hessel) of Weimar, Texas; Steven Hessel (and wife Tyra Montgomery Hessel) of Houston; and Kristina Hessel Brosig (and husband Tom) of Houston.
He is also survived by his five beloved grandchildren: Zachary Hessel (and wife Stephanie), Nathan Hessel (and wife Lauren), Theresa Hessel Laurienti (and husband Joseph), Chase Brosig, and Meredith Brosig; as well as six amazing great-grandchildren.

His life will be celebrated in the coming days with a private family service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas or the University of Houston Alumni Association.
