Eleanor Culberson Obituary

Eleanor Abney Culberson
1930-2015
Eleanor Abney Culberson, beloved mother, grandmother and widow of Jim Culberson, passed away Wednesday, November 18th, 2015. Born in 1930 to James L. and Adelyn W. Abney, Eleanor embraced adventure and a love of learning her whole life. She spent her formative years as the daughter of a United States Navy JAG officer in Panama and then in Brownsville, Texas, where her father also served as an Assistant U. S. Attorney. After the war, the Abney family moved to Houston where Eleanor graduated from Lamar High School. She then went on to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque where she met Jim. They married in 1950 and returned to Houston to build a family.
Eleanor focused her adult life on nurturing, encouraging and preparing her four children for life and by all measures did so very successfully. When time permitted, her other passions were travelling with her family and contributing to her community as a volunteer in Republican political campaigns and organizations such as the Houston Zoo Docents program. She instilled a love for learning, science and the natural world in all her children. Once her children were older, she began a professional career at Mobil Oil where she used her geology degree to help find offshore oil and gas deposits for future generations. She also worked in Harris County Constable Glen Cheek's office until she retired.

Eleanor is survived by her four children, Jimmy, Jennifer, John, Chris and two beautiful and talented granddaughters, Amanda and Caroline. She was loved by all who knew her and she will be sorely missed. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible contributions may be made in her name to Citizens for Animal Protection (cap4pets.org). Visit www.DettlingFuneral.com to leave online tributes.

Not sure what to say?

Eleanor and I pretty much agreed on the policies that need changing

Eleanor was a friend going back perhaps 25 years going back to her days as an opponent of nuclear power. She enjoyed the lunch meetings of Houston Property Rights Association, though we have not seen her since 2008 or so.

Whenever I called we always discussed the cat she invariable had nestled in her lap.

This is a wonderful photo of Eleanor.

I knew Eleanor many years ago and I regret that we didn't keep in touch. Her father and mine (George Cottingham) were the best of friends and our family spent many a Christmas morning at the Abney's breakfast featuring "Eggs a la Zilch". Those days bring special memories to mind. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with your family in your grief.

Eleanor was a good friend and I enjoyed all of our lunches and visits over the years. She was a lively lady with a good sense of humor. She will be missed by many.
