Ernest Ladd Obituary

ERNEST LAWRENCE LADD ("Ernie the Big Cat"), 68, passed away Saturday, March 10th, 2007 at 10:00 pm in Franklin, Louisiana following a long battle with cancer. Ernie was born November 28, 1938 in Rayville, Louisiana, though he spent most of his youth in Orange, Texas where he graduated from Emma Wallace High School. His high school coach was Willie Ray Smith Sr., the father of the College Hall of Fame football player Bubba Smith. He attended Grambling State University in Louisiana where he was a football standout under legendary coach Eddie Robinson. The American Football League's San Diego Chargers selected Ernie in the 1961 draft. Ladd played in three AFL championship games, helping the Chargers win the American Football League title in 1963. He spent the 1966 season playing for the Houston Oilers, where he teamed with his uncle Garland Boyette, before moving in 1967 to the Kansas City Chiefs where played in the first Super Bowl. Ernie began wrestling part-time in 1961, and when he began wrestling full-time in the 1970s became one of the sport's biggest world-wide draws. Ernie is the only person to be elected to both the American Football League Hall of Fame and the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame. In addition, he was a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the Grambling State University Hall of Fame, and an honoree of the Museum of the Gulf Coast. Ernie and his family were long-time residents of Houston where they were members of the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. During this period he was active in social and public affairs, co-founding the Professional United Leadership League (P.U.LL) with Oiler teammate John White. This lead to Ernie's involvement in political affairs, where he worked actively in the political campaigns of President George H.W. Bush, President George W. Bush, and former football colleague Jack Kemp. Upon his retirement from sport in 1986, Ernie and his wife Roslyn moved to Franklin, Louisiana where he was active in church and business affairs. Ernie is survived by his wife of more than 45 years, Roslyn; three sons, Ernie and Rodney, of Franklin, La and Reginald, of Houston; a daughter, Erika Peters of Broussard, La.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jamesetta Ford and Louella Jolley, both of Houston; a brother, James Ford, of Woscom, Tex., an uncle Garland D. Boyette, Sr. of Missouri City, TX, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place from 9:00 am to 11: 00, Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the West St. Mary Civic Center, 1498 Highway 318, Sorrell, La. A funeral service with Rev. Clarence Stewart, Sr. celebrant will follow at 11:00 am with interment at the Franklin Cemetery, Franklin, La.

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of a legend. I was in school with the big fellow and I can remember some real great times we had. May God continue to bless the family. I remember wearing my high school lettered jacket on the campus and Ernie came over to me and told me that I couldn't wear anything but the "G" on the yard, and I immediately took it off and folded it inside out and took it to my room. We laughed about that after I got to know him.

My condolence to the Ladd Family. It was good to see Mr. Ladd a few weeks ago in Grambling at a basketball game. He was very jolley as usual. I will continue to remember him in this way. Thanks for allowing him to serve his alma mater through the Grambling University Athletic Foundation. May God continue to Bless you as you deal with this transition. Thanks!

We were saddened too by the passing of "Big Red," as we called Mr. Ladd in 1958-61. I last saw him at Homecoming 2005 when he tailgated next to us behind the stadium. He admonished me, "Don't put that fork in that chicken, Mac, because you will let the juices out." I won't forget that.

As an old-school GSU Bandsman, we stayed in the Barracks with the Football Team during preseason back in the day. We all had fun relaxing and playing cards during the evenings. There are stories galore! Ernie was a great man, and his presence will be missed by many, I'm sure.

May God bless Roslyn and the family and give them peace.

Rosalyn, you all are very close to our hearts... from your days at Grambling with my dad to the times in New Orleans when Ernie was wrestling ( Brandi was about 2 and he had her in the ring at the Superdome and of course people were throwing things at him, but you know that didn't stop him) to the times of sitting in the kitchen on 'his' barstool and watching him eat ice cream. He was always amazing! His heart was bigger than life itself and his faith even greater. He was an inspiration to Bruiser and to all our lives. His never give up attitude will be with us always.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Douglas Collier

March 17, 2007

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy for the family. Just recently I spoke to my dad (Archie Jolley, brother in law) and he informed me of Big Earnie's passing. It was unbelievable. My last recollection of him was the hug he gave me at my grandfather's funeral. Not totally knowing me, he extended his heart to me. I appreciate it whole-heartedly. I know saying "I am sorry for your loss" is not a way of relieving greif, so instead I would like to all to remember the stregnth and kindness he exemplified. To the family God is with you and remember how blesses you are to have had someone like him within your lives for as long as it had been.

You guys are in my prayers,

Tammy Jolley

To: Roslyn and Children

Now the laborer’s task is over;
Now the Battle day is past;
Now upon the farther shore
Lands the voyager at last.

It is with great sorrow that we part with our GSU friend Ernest on this side of Jordan, but oh what joy when we meet on the other side. When we reach that blessed homeland, Where there's everlasting day; On that bright and blessed morning, God shall wipe all tears away.

Always bear in mind that spirit was never born and spirit can never die. Remember that God gives grace for each trial, and courage for each sorrow and faith to face in confidence a blessed, sweet, blissful and bright tommorrow.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ladd while attending Grambling State University. I can remember all the wonderful times I spent with Stone Johnson, "Buke", Garland Boyette and Ernest at Grambling. He was always a warm and caring person. As I go to my Father in prayer, I will ask for a special blessing for Roslyn, Anna Pearl and the entire Ladd Family.

With warm regards,
James Brown, Retired Educator
Drum Major, GSU "Tiger Band"
