Ferne "mothered" me: smoothed over my mistakes, calmed my concerns, and nurturing my self-esteem and careers - for the late 1980s until 2011. Words fail.

She was the Magic Reference Librarian, who could tell you where to find anything. She was so good at turning lost and hopeless students into empowered hopeful students with a big stack of books.

I am indebted to Ferne and Harold for all the advice and more importantly all the listening they pointed my way. I owe both for the inspiration to do one thing in my life I had put on hold; finish my degree. How could I not go back and finish it and earn the diploma even at age 51 with them as examples and mentors. Regardless of any and all of the the personal achievements I hold or might in the future that accomplishment is in the highest position and makes all others possible and its thanks to them that I have that degree to crown my list of accomplishments. Thank you both!
Thank you Ferne! Thank you Harold (The Congressman)!
God bless you and always keep you in his grace! John F. Hinman

Mrs. Hyman was a very special person for all of us at Rice. I was a student and employee there for over 20 years (between 1985 and 2007) and always appreciated her kindness and sincerity. I will always remember her as one of the best in the Rice community.

Auntie Ferne was such an important part of our lives. She was like a mother to Leslye, Wendy and me after we lost our Mom (her sister) so many years ago. She was always there to offer advice, and to comfort us and help us when we needed it. I wish we all could have spent more time with her, but we will cherish our memories of her with great fondness. As a family, I know that our bonds will never be broken.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom but do understand the relief one feels when a loved one suffers from cancer and finally loses the battle. Julie (my sister) went through a horrible ordeal and when she passed the sadness was great but we were so relieved that she wasn't suffering any more. Our prayers are with you and your family at this time.

My fond memories of Ferne go back to 1968, when I first went to work at Fondren. She welcomed me and took me under her wing, as I'm sure she did countless other young people through the years. My sympathies to the family.
