Gary Hartman Obituary

Gary Ray Hartman died suddenly on March 31, 2012 with his wife and best friend, Susan, at his side. We will miss his gentle nature and wicked sense of humor.
Gary is deeply loved by Susan; daughters, Emily Ascher and Maggie Gladson (Chip); grandchildren, Aimee, Zach, Stella, Mina and Charlie; brother-in-law, Steven Siegel (Lucia); nephew, Eddie; brother, Fred; and sister, Joan.
Gary's family included his many friends in the music community. May his absence be partly filled by the music that gave him such joy.
Gary, 63, was born in Memphis. Plans for a memorial are pending.
Donations in Gary's memory may be made to the Grateful Dead's Rex Foundation or the CdLS Foundation in the name of his grandson, Charlie Gladson.

To Susan and Family, I was shocked to hear of the passing of Gary. I have nothing but great memories of many nights of music at the Last Concert Cafe. I hope to be able to attend the New Monsoon concert in June. You and your family remain in my prayers.

Gary was one of a kind. In fact, my favorite kind :-) His premature passing leaves a huge hole in my life, and that of all the others who were fortunate enough to be touched by his love for live music and his gentle nature. I'm blessed to have been his partner in bringing the music he loved to Houston, to have traveled the country with him and to have been witness to his wedding to Susan in Las Vegas--he actually won the jackpot twice that night--marrying Susan and a major slot machine jackpot. I only won it once--the night we met at Rockefeller's.

With a heart of gold, an ear for great music, and the ability to make lifelong friendships with anyone who met him, Gary was a true mensch and I will never forget him.
Thank you Susan so much for all the times you sacrificed so that Gary could do all that he did for us and most of all... thank you for sharing him with us.
We love you and know that G$ will always have a place in our hearts and a spot on the rail.

Susan, I was saddened to hear of Gary's passing. I have fond memories of work meetings where Gary always told it like it was. He never sugar-coated anything and for that I respected him. I hope you find comfort in the fact that Gary was well-liked by many and may God give you the strength to carry on. He will be missed.

I just learned of this, and I will deeply miss Gary. He and I both loved Rock and Roll, although he was a Deadhead more than I am. (It figures that the donations should go to the Dean Rex Foundation.) He also owned the most sardonic sense of humor and the absurd, which served him well in his time here. I just heard from him last week, when I wrote a concert review that he took issue with, the highest compliment we could pay each other.

We learned a lot from Gary - mainly how to be friendly and smile. To work with him on occasion was an honor. To call him a friend was even more so.

I think Gary (G$) would want us to throw it down in his honor, any where any place...He loved his music almost as much as he loved his Family, and Phamily. We are all at a loss, and do not quite know what to do. We must continue to do the work that Gary started, with a smile on our faces, like he always did. Thinking about others first, like he did, and holding his dear Wife Susan in our hearts and prayers. LOVE FEIRCELY FOLKS !!!
