George McDaniel Obituary

George O. McDaniel, Jr., loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 86 years on August 10, 2012. He was born January 31, 1926, in Beulah, Mississippi to Elba Steen and George Otto McDaniel. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Army and served his country during WWII. He then went on to graduate from Mississippi State University in 1948 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. In 1956, he began his career with Dow Chemical where he earned the reputation as a skillful manager. "Big George" as his family called him, had a natural courtesy and easygoing manner that endeared him to everyone whose life he touched. He and his wife, Margaret, lived and traveled all around the world and they made many friends along the way. He retired in 1986 as the President of Dow Engineering. He enjoyed spending time with his family and had a passion for bird hunting and his bird dogs. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Margaret McLaurin McDaniel.
He is survived by his sons, George O. McDaniel, III and wife Ann; Mike McDaniel and wife Laura; and grandchildren, Mac McDaniel and wife Kayli, Mary O'Black and husband Weston, Will McDaniel, Meagan McDaniel, Kristin McDaniel, Elizabeth Driggs, and Ben Driggs. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Jean Phillips of Grand Bay, Alabama, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at one o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, August 14, in the Chapel of the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston with The Rev. Laurens A. Hall, D.D., officiating. A reception will be held immediately following at the home of Mike and Laura McDaniel.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family kindly suggests contributions be directed to the Outreach Fund of the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard, Houston, TX 77019.
