George Medley Obituary

Dr. George Everett Medley, was born in Bonham, Texas October 14, 1934 to George Everett Medley Sr. and Lottie Medley. He was raised in Bowie, Texas and graduated from Bowie High School in 1951. He went on to pre-med school at Rice University in Houston and medical school at the University of Texas at Galveston. George did his internship at Queen's hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Orthopedic residency at Dallas VA Hospital and Parkland Hospital, Dallas. He did a children's orthopedic residency at Crippled Children's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
From 1959 to 1961, George served in the military as a Sr. Surgeon with the US Public Health Service prior to the Vietnam War. George was a board certified orthopedic surgeon. He started his first orthopedic residency on Ella Blvd, in Houston, Texas and was on active staff within the Memorial Hospital System, Heights Hospital and Parkway Hospital.
In 1977, his first wife, Betty, died of breast cancer, leaving their four children to raise; Mark, Lynne, Michael, and Leslie. He left his practice to be "Mr. Mom" and personally raise his family. He joined the staff of the VA Hospital in Houston working only half days so he could be home when his children came home from school. He spent many happy times with them fishing and riding his bike on the beach in Galveston. In 1984, after his children were grown, he married Barbara and moved to Tyler to start a new practice and a new life. He welcomed Barbara's children, Sherri and Shelbi, into his life and helped raise Shelbi from age 12. He took great pride in the influence he had on her life. George practiced orthopedics in Tyler until his retirement in 2002. He continued to keep his mind active in medicine doing second opinion reports and designated doctors' exams for the Texas department of insurance division of worker's compensation.
George loved living on Lake Tyler in Whitehouse, Texas with his wife Barbara and his constant companion, his Cocker Spaniel "Dakota", having his family visit, driving his boat, and sitting on his covered deck when it rained. He enjoyed life and its simple things. We will miss his stories, sweet smile, and the protective comfort he gave.
Graveside services will be held in Houston at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1101 Antoine, on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at 2 p.m. Flowers may be sent or donations made to the Humane Society in his name.

Mark & Leslie - I was so saddened to learn of your father's passing. Mark spoke so often of his father's many accomplishments and took such great pride in being his son. He showed such devotion to his family and I know how deeply both Mark & Leslie will miss their Dad. Your father had such a spirit of generosity and compassion, traits he passed on to you both. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love you much,

We knew George as neighbors at Lake Tyler. We grew very fond of him during walks around the neighborhood when George was out excercising his faithful and ever present Dakota. We will miss his pleasant and gentle demeanor.

Leslie - Unfortunately, I only met your dad once during the many years I have known you. However, it was enough to know that he was a fine man and extraordinary father, having raised such a wonderful daughter as you. As I read the obituary, it pays tribute to him for his love and dedication to you, your siblings and family. I know you will miss him immensely and I pray that God will wrap His loving arms around you for the comfort that you will need. Just cherish all those fine memories you have growing up with him and in the latter years knowing that he was so devoted to his family. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love you!

Mark.

I am so sorry for your loss. Although I did not know Dr. Medley personally, I almost felt as though I did, as he was the Orthopedic Surgeon for several family members prior to his retirement. On many occassions I have heard rave reviews of what a wonderful man and excellent surgeon he was. And of course, also through my longtime sweet friend and realtor, Barbara, who on occassion would share a sweet and funny story! It is apparent he was well thought of and beloved!
